Robert John Herbert, age 83, passed away on the morning of June 22, 2013. Born June 19, 1930 in New York, NY to Robert and Cora Herbert. Preceded in death by wife, Susan Torgerson Herbert; brother, Bruce E. Herbert; and nephew Geoffrey Herbert. Survived by sons, John and Douglas; niece Caroline Hillkirk; daughter-in-law Susan Herbert; grandchildren Joseph, Thomas, and Michael. Bob grew up in New York City. Age the age of 17, he enrolled in Harvard University where he was in Navy ROTC. After graduating in 1951, he was commissioned in the Navy and served for 3 years. Bob attended Columbia Medical School and after two years, he transferred and was graduated from The University of Virginia in Charlottesville. He interned in Denver, CO and completed his residency at the Boston VA. In 1962, Bob settled in Dallas, TX, where he entered private practice in Psychiatry. He was very active in the Dallas Medical Community and served on staff or as medical director at several area hospitals including Green Oaks, Presbyterian, Grace Community Mental Health Center and the Arlington Clinic of Tarrant County and was a Clinical Associate Professor at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School. In August 1964, Bob married Susan Torgerson, from Moorhead, MN, and had two sons, John and Douglas. He loved classical music and he and Susan were loyal patrons of The Dallas Symphony. In 2006, Bob retired and moved up to St. Louis Park, MN to be closer to his sons and grandchildren. Bob had a broad, warm smile, a great sense of humor, and was a generous, loving man. He adored his grandsons and was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather and loyal friend. Funeral services will be held in Dallas, TX at Preston Road Church of Christ on on Thursday July 11, 2013 at 2PM with a reception immediately following. Bob will be laid to rest next to his late wife, Susan, at Sparkman/Hillcrest Cemetary in Dallas.
