Dirks, Ruth Upton 93, Richardson, TX. Died March 28, 2013. Ruth grew up in South Dakota, received degrees in nursing and journalism, and worked at Shriners Hospital for Children Chicago and in the Army Nurse Corps during World War II. Ruth lived in the Dallas area with her husband Dick since 1953. A homemaker, she volunteered with the Girl Scouts, local schools, her church, and as area director of the American Field Service. Her family hosted several international exchange students. Ruth was an accomplished artist, receiving many prizes for her paintings, and active in local arts organizations, especially Associated Creative Artists. An avid reader, traveler and sports fan, she was also an exceptional cook, award-winning baker, and entertaining storyteller. She wrote a collection of essays and a memoir, From the Corners of My Mind. Ruth and Dick celebrated their 61st anniversary last September. She is survived by her husband, daughters Susan Dirks (Kent Stevens) of Austin, Carol Dirks of Frisco, Mary Winter (Douglas) of Roseburg, OR, and Jean Brazil (Michael) of Mansfield, and grandsons, Justin, Ryan, and Kevin Brazil. Interment of ashes will be in Emden, IL.
