William Neary Obituary
Neary, William Leonard William Leonard Neary died on December 24, 2012 as a result of a tragic accident. Bill was born in Cedar Rapids, Iowa on November 14, 1925. He attended St. Patrick's High School and joined the Navy in 1943 and served on the USS Duncan - Pacific Theater during World War II. After the war he attended the University of Wisconsin where he was a member of the boxing team and Big Ten middleweight champion. Bill transferred to the University of Iowa where he was a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity and subsequently graduated from Augustana College. In 1955 he graduated from the University of Iowa Law School and was a member of the Law Review and Order of the Coif. After graduation he began his legal career at Kirkland and Ellis in Chicago. Following his tenure at Kirkland, Bill became General Counsel of one of his clients, Wilson and Company, in Chicago. In 1967, Ling Temco Vought acquired Wilson and the following year the family relocated to Dallas when Bill accepted a position as Associate General Counsel of LTV. In 1970, he founded the boutique litigation firm of Neary and Ives in Dallas, which became known for handling complex litigation focused on securities law with LTV as its lead client. In 1978, Bill rejoined the LTV family as Senior Vice President and General Counsel of Wilson and Co., an LTV subsidiary in Oklahoma City, OK. When LTV sold Wilson, he relocated back to Dallas where he finished his career in 1990 with LTV as Senior Vice President and Associate General Counsel His personal life revolved around his family comprised of three sons - Mike, Jeff and Tom and his wife LuAnn. Together they pursued many passions revolving around sports and competition. Baseball was his favorite pastime as he coached youth teams for many years in Chicago and became an avid Texas Rangers fan after years of disappointment with the Chicago White Sox and Cubs. When he arrived in Dallas he also became active in horse activities was a member of the American Quarter Horse Association and actively engaged in horse racing, barrel racing, pony express and other competitive events with his younger sons, Jeff and Tom. After retirement Bill and his wife LuAnn pursued their new passion - golf, coupled with travel. They were members of Brookhaven Country Club and traveled the world playing ClubCorp courses. Numerous trips to England, France, Germany, Austria and Switzerland were on the agenda. However, Bill was particularly fond of playing in Ireland, a tribute to the family roots. He is survived by his wife, LuAnn, and three sons - Mike, Jeff and Tom and their respective spouses, Katharine, Edie A, and Irena. There are nine grandchildren - Jennifer and Michael Neary; Will and Sam Neary; Jack and Jill Neary; and Patrick, Allie and Lily Neary. There will be a Memorial Mass on Saturday, December 29 in the Chapel at 1:30 pm at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton, 2700 West Spring Creek Parkway, Plano, TX 75023. . Memorials: In lieu of flowers, a contribution to the University of Iowa Law School Foundation, One Park West Road, Iowa City, Iowa 52244 in Bill's name may be made.
