David Amland

Amland, David Andrew 79, artist, teacher, amateur historian and naturalist, passed away Sunday, February 28, 2010, due to complications following surgery. He is survived by sons David Stephen, Adam, and Noah; daughters-in-law Ines and Donna; grandsons Carter, Austin, and Thor; former wife, Joan Carlson, and a large extended family of nieces, nephews, friends and well-wishers. An avid biker, political observer, flatulator, and cinephile, Mr. Amland was born in Iowa City, Iowa, on the eighth of February, 1931. He grew up in St. Paul, Minnesota, and served in the Navy from 1951 to 1955. He received his undergraduate degree from Augustana College in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, and a Masters of Fine Arts degree from the University of Iowa in 1959. He taught for several years at Midland Lutheran College in Nebraska, before moving to Carmel, California. There he was active in the local art community until 2003, when he moved to north Texas. Mr. Amland is remembered as an intelligent, humorous, kind and loving man, with a strong sense of social justice, a seemly encyclopedic knowledge of films, and an appreciation for football and notable Minnesotans. He loved his family, classical music, good wine, old airplanes and locomotives, and Seinfeld. A memorial service will be held at 2:00 Saturday, March 6, 2010, at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, 2620 Grauwyler Rd, Irving, TX, 75061. Mr. Amland's final resting places will include the Dallas-Fort Worth Memorial Cemetery, and the Pacific Ocean, off the coast of Carmel, where he will be near his mother and father, and sister, Barbara.
