Phillips, Evelyn Watkins Passed away in Dallas on Saturday, August 8, 2009. The 90-year old native of Houston, Texas, was born on December 22, 1918. She was preceded in death by her mother, Julia Humphrey Watkins, her father, John Henry Watkins, her brother, John Henry Watkins, Jr., and her husband, Clifford Earl Phillips. Mrs. Phillips grew up in Palestine, Texas, and graduated from Palestine High School. She earned her Bachelor?s degree from Texas Christian University in Ft. Worth, Texas with majors in sociology and history. After graduation, she worked at the YMCA in Fort Worth, and later taught public school in Grand Saline, Texas. In 1948 she married her husband of 60 years, Clifford Earl Phillips of Grand Saline. After moving to Dallas, Mrs. Phillips worked at Baylor Hospital before starting a family. She and her husband Clifford were two of the founding members of Casa View Christian Church in east Dallas. For almost 50 years she served as librarian of the church library, and was recognized later in life by having the church library named after her in honor of her many years of dedicated service. In 1965 she began working as a librarian at Lake Highlands Junior High School. She continued in this position until her retirement. Mrs. Phillips is survived by her two sons, Paul and his wife Fredrica, and David and his wife Jana, her grandchildren Kathryn and David Phillips, and her nephew John Jerome Watkins and his wife Joan. A memorial service will be held at Casa View Christian Church, located at 2230 Barnes Bridge Road in Dallas, at 11:00 A.M. on Saturday, August 15, 2009.
