Thomas, Esther Harris Left her earthly home on Wednesday Jan. 13, 2010. A Homegoing Service will be held Monday January 18, 2010 at First Baptist Church located at 303 North Market Street in Brenham, Texas with the Rev. R.L. Lacy officiating, Eulogy Dr. Pastor John D. Harris of Mt. Rose Missionary Baptist Church. Internment will follow at the Walker Cemetery on Highway 105 in Brenham (Old Washington) Texas. Visitation will be at 9:00 a.m. and services will begin at 11:00 a.m. Esther Harris Thomas was the last of five children, born January 11, 1919 to John D. and Mary Magdalene Johnson of Washington County, Texas. She attended Antioch Elementary School, Pickard High School and graduated from Prairie View College where she received a teaching certificate. She met and married Cecil Harris, December 25, 1940 and they were blessed with seven children. Esther Harris Thomas was well known for her political and social acumen. She counseled many political hopefuls and worked tirelessly for that which she believed to be right and true. She believed in both friendship and fellowship proven time and again to those that sat around her kitchen table among her collection of curiosities and gallery of photos. She was held in high esteem by all that was privileged to know and love her. Though she was a pioneer in some areas, she can be better described as a woman before her time and a priceless jewel. Serving twenty-seven years as prescient chair, founding member of the Inter-Organizational Counsel in Hamilton Park (located in Dallas, Texas). She was proceeded in death by her beloved Cecil, both parents, brothers Elliot "Dock" and Robert Johnson, sister Annis Jones and Johnnie Mae Webb, and grandchildren: Fache, Doreen and Kelvin Nathainel. She leaves to mourn her memory sons: Cecil Jr., John David (Helen), Robert and George: daughters: Shirley Harris, Julia Faye Harris -Williams (Stanley), and Vanessa Harris Howard; grandchildren Derek, Yolanda, Teresa, James, Rita, Richard, Merton, Michael, Cecilia, Joye, Dawn, Karen, Catricia, Kelvin, Christian, Myosha, Tiquan, Antoine, Andra, Andrea, Angelina, and Ahmard; great-grand-children Michael, Christopher, Alexander, Jonathan, Joshua, Breanna, Lovie, Carter, Kingdom, Christian, Heaven, Cameron, Tempest, Delvin, Alexandria, Aden, Anderson, Andrew, Armani, and Zander. She will also be remembered by her Mt. Seriah Missionary Baptist Church family, Hamilton Park Baptist Church, New Birth Baptist Church of Plano, Texas, the Democratic Club of Washington County, "special friends" Hugh Williams, Rosie Lee Erving, Sheila Ross Henderson, Raylene Peoples and Wanda Robinson along with a host of nieces, nephews, relatives, cousins, godchildren and friends.
