Shirley Binder Obituary
Binder, Shirley Fleischer Shirley Fleischer Binder, 82, of Dallas, TX, passed away on Wednesday, July 26, 2012 at her residence surrounded by her loving family. She will always be remembered as a loving mother, grandmother, friend and distinguished higher education administrator to all that knew and loved her. She was born in Seattle, Washington on July 4, 1930 to Russell and Helen Fleischer. For over fifty years, Shirley held major leadership positions in Texas and Washington State Universities. She served as the Dean of Admissions and Records and Director of Student Financial Aid at the University of Texas at Austin from 1974-1995; Director of Student Financial Aid, St. Edwards University from 1972-1974, Assistant Director of Student Financial Aid, Washington State University from 1968-1971 and most recently as special assistant to the Dean for Graduate Affairs at the University of Texas of Arlington from 1996 - 2009. Prior to her outstanding higher education experiences, Shirley was the Girl Scout Director, Seattle, Washington from 1960-1967. She attended Washington State University where she earned her BA and Masters Degree in higher education administration. She was also a member of many numerous professional and major academic associations throughout her years of service. Survivors include her daughter and son-in-law Maggie and Mike Holsomback and their children, Max, Georgia and Ben, her son and daughter-in-law, Allen and Cindy Binder, and their children, Russ, Zach, and Lauren and Travis Ferguson and great-grandchild Ethan. She is also survived by her special lifelong friends, Dr. Bob and Marion Guyer of Seattle, Washington. She was preceded in death by her father, Russell Egon Fleischer and her mother Helen Fleischer. The family wishes to give special thanks Dr. Barbara Haley and the Staff at UT Southwestern for their kind and excellent care during Shirley's illness. A Memorial Service will be held at 11:00 am at St. Michael and All Angels Episcopal Church, 8011 Douglas Ave., Dallas, TX, 75225 on Monday, July 30, 2012. In lieu of flowers the family has asked that contributions be made to the University of Texas at Austin in memory of Shirley Binder at http://www.utexas.edu/ or by calling 1-866-488-3927. Contributions made in Shirley's memory will go towards a family-designated scholarship to allow the University to continue creating leaders for tomorrow.
