Nellie (Nelle) Barshop Chertkov passed away November 8, 2012, at the age of 98. The oldest of four children, Nelle was born in Dallas, June 3, 1914 to Louis and Mary Barshop. She graduated from Forest Avenue High School in Dallas at 16. After attending the University of Texas for a year, she began her sales career. A true extrovert, Nelle was a natural at sales. The last three decades of her career were spent at Neiman Marcus, Preston Center and NorthPark (Galleria and Couture). She received an "E" for Excellence Award from Stanley Marcus for distinguished achievement. Although Nelle was a successful career woman, her family was her priority. An avid reader, she taught her children to love learning and to do their best in school. Part of her legacy is that she passed her love of learning to her daughters who earned Masters Degrees and had long careers as public school educators. When her husband, Paul, became ill, she retired in 1979 to care for him. After his death in 1985, she became president of the Golden Acres Volunteers Association. She was a member of Temple Emanu-El for 55 years where she enjoyed participating in the Leisure Club. From 2002 to 2008 Nelle resided at Town Village North Retirement Community and then lived with her older daughter. Although Nelle faced numerous health challenges during the last 10 years of her life, she maintained her positive attitude and sense of humor. She loved being with her grandson, nature, the color orange, dark chocolate, barbecue, pate de fois gras, soup, coffee, Frank Sinatra, singing old songs (out of tune), bridge, newspapers, crossword puzzles, and making others laugh. In addition to her parents, husband of 40 years (Paul Chertkov), and infant twin daughters, Nelle was predeceased by her three siblings: First Sergeant Milton Barshop, who was killed in action in 1945 and received a Purple Heart; Freda Barshop Fagin; and Margueritte Barshop Wiseman. She was also predeceased by her first husband, George Mirsky. Survived by her children: George Mirsky, Sandra Chertkov, and Rhonda (Neil) Fried and cherished grandson, Paul Fried. Also survived by cousins, nieces and nephews. Family graveside services were held on November 9, 2012 at Temple Emanu-El Cemetery.
