Cullum Jr., George Pierce 94, of Dallas, passed away on Friday, surrounded by family and those who loved him. Mr. Cullum was born in Dallas on May 18, 1918, to the late George Pierce Cullum Sr. and wife Ethel. He graduated from Southern Methodist University with a degree in civil engineering in 1942 and married the love of his life, Kathleen Moore of Sabinal on April 11, 1942. He then served in World War II as a member of the Naval Construction Battalion. An educated and trained civil engineer, Mr. Cullum returned to Dallas after the war and spent the rest of his life raising his family and working in the city he loved and, in many ways, helped to build. He was the second-generation owner of Cullum Construction Company, founded in 1918 by his late father and uncle, and still owned and operated by the Cullum family. He also served as a chairman of the Dallas Planning Commission and was a past president of the Texas Heavy Municipal and Utility Chapter of the Associated General Contractors of America. Mr. Cullum was an active member of many organizations, including the Salesmanship Club of Dallas, Rotary Club of Dallas, and Dallas Country Club. He was a lifelong member of Oak Lawn United Methodist Church, where his great-grandfather, Marcus Hiram Cullum, was founding pastor. His contributions were often recognized, having been honored with multiple awards for service and achievement among them, the Construction Industry Brotherhood Award from the National Conference of Christians and Jews, the SMU Distinguished Alumni Award, the SMU Civil Engineering School Distinguished Alumni Award, the Greater Dallas YMCA Leadership Award, and the Lifetime Service Award from the Rotary Club of Dallas. Mr. Cullum loved his church, music, travel, and all-things SMU. He played the piano and organ by ear, took 27 cruises and countless trips with his family and friends, and supported his church and alma mater through gifts, service and attendance throughout his life. Mr. Cullum is survived by his children Linda Cullum Tunnell and Ray, George Mark Cullum and Sally, and Philip Houston Cullum and Dale; grandchildren James Cullum Brownlee and Wendy, Mark Christian Cullum and Becky, Leigh Cullum Langner and Jason, Carolina Cullum Martin and Matthew, Susannah Cullum McGown and Patrick, Elizabeth Cullum Clarke and Buddy, George Pierce Cullum III and Ali, and Callie Linda Cullum; great-grandchildren Kamryn Grace Brownlee, Cullum James Brownlee, George Pierce Cullum IV, Drew Houston Langner, David Cosby (Tripp) Clarke III, Elise Delight Langer, Daniel Grayson Martin and Holly Virginia Cullum; sister Marion Cullum Griffith; and many beloved nieces and nephews.
