George Shutt

Shutt, George Austin George Austin Shutt, known to his friends as Tom, died peacefully in his home on Saturday, January 19, 2013. He was born July 29,1931 in Bronxville, New York, then moved with his parents into his grandfather's home in New Rochelle, New York. Throughout his life, he treasured his education at The Lawrenceville School in Lawrenceville, New Jersey, graduating in 1950 and later becoming a Lifetime Trustee. He graduated from Yale University in 1954 with a B.A.in Economics. He served as Manager of the football team his senior year and was a member of Delta Kappa Epsilon fraternity and the Desmos Society. He came to Dallas after graduation to work for his father's best friend from Yale, Harold Volk, while awaiting orders from the Air Force. He met his future wife during that summer job, later serving as Second Lieutenant and the Squadron Adjutant at the Strategic Air Command base in Austin, Texas. He moved to Dallas and began his business career at the Mercantile Bank before joining the Trammell Crow Company as its 9th employee and third partner. Having been mentored by Trammell Crow, he served as a mentor to the younger partners there. Tom was very proud of his adopted home Dallas, Texas, generously supporting many of its educational, cultural, and medical facilities. He served on the boards of The Hockaday School, Dallas Zoological SocietyDallas County Heritage Society, Friends of the Governor's Mansion, and Cullen Frost Bank. He was a Junior Warden of St Michael and All Angels Church and spent several years overseeing construction of the Hamon Wing at the Dallas Museum of Art as Co Chairman of the DMA Building Committee. He was a member of the Idlewild Club and Brook Hollow Golf Club. He was predeceased by his mother, Harriet Haight Shutt, his father, George Parker Shutt, and his daughter, Anne Perkins Shutt He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Nancy Perkins Shutt, his daughter and son-in-law, Harriet and Chris Burrow, his grandchildren, Nancy and Steele Burrow, his brother, Kenneth Shutt, his wife and children, and his sister-in-law, Cherrie Wells, and her children. To all who knew him, he will be remembered as a gentleman in every sense of the word. A memorial service will be held 1:00 p.m. on Friday, January 25th, in the sanctuary at St. Michael and All Angels Church.
