Barbara Silberberg Obituary

Silberberg, Barbara Barbara Arden Schwartz Silberberg, beloved wife, mother, daughter, sister and friend, died February 12, 2014, in Dallas, Texas. She was born on July 30, 1933, in New York City, and at age three, moved to Dallas with her parents, Abe and Betty Schwartz, and her older brother, Erwin Schwartz, all of whom predeceased her. A proud Highland Park Scot, Barbara attended Highland Park schools and graduated from Highland Park High School at age 16 in 1950. She attended the University of Oklahoma and returned to Dallas. In the mid-1950s, she worked for Malcolm Brachman, and met her husband-to-be, Alfred (Al) H. Silberberg, a petroleum engineer. They married in 1959 and had three daughters. She loved participating in school projects for their daughters at Greenhill School. A lifelong Democrat, Barbara was always involved with numerous projects that benefited the most vulnerable in our society. She volunteered for many political campaigns, including Adlene Harrison's winning races for Dallas City Council and Mayor. She was hired to serve as manager of the Dallas campaign headquarters for Ann Richards' gubernatorial race. Governor Richards appointed Barbara to the Texas State Library and Archives Commission, where she served 1991-1997. An active member of the National Council of Jewish Women (NCJW), she was also a lifelong member of Temple Emanu-El. For a decade, one NCJW project Barbara worked on was the docent program at the Meyerson Symphony Center. Barbara was blessed with extended family as well as numerous close friendships. People who knew Barbara will always remember her love of family, a wide circle of friends, gourmet cooking, politics, the arts, sports, movies and books. Her life was a blessing, and she will be profoundly missed. Her beloved husband, Al, died in 2000. Barbara is survived by daughter, Dana Bartholomew, and son-in-law, Richard Bartholomew; and daughters, Allison Silberberg and Susan Silberberg, as well as numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. A memorial service will be held on Sunday, February 16, 2014, at 1 pm in the Sanctuary at Temple Emanu-El, 8500 Hillcrest Rd, Dallas, TX 75225. A reception in Pollman Hall at Temple will follow the memorial service. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Temple Emanu-El or the charity of your choice.

Allison,
I think it was the second time meeting you that I asked you why would you run for councilwoman? All the campaigning, the long hours and then the not so great pay. You answered, "I'm inspired by my mother. She's my hero in life." I said she must be an amazing person to have such an effect on you. Now reading her obituary, I understand. Impressive. I know you'll miss her deeply and my prayers go out to you and your family.
