Wow, I just learned this after being on the road for a few weeks. Much love to you all and I so fondly remember Jim. We had many political conversations together, and spent a few nights in Kerrville chatting about the country and Texas. Matthew.

Nan, I am so very, very sorry to hear about your dad. I have such fond memories of him from when you and I were kids growing up; your home in Kerrville was like my second home for many years. Your dad had such a great sense of humor and was so kind to me when I was there. I will never forget all the times I spent with you and your parents. Bless your heart! Michael and I send our thoughts and prayers to you and your family...and our deepest condolences. To you, I send big hugs! Love you! Holly Byrd Cooper and Michael Cooper

Jim was a good man and a great friend. I was honored to serve with him at the Texas Railroad Commission and I learned so much from Jim. He was a strong man with a strong personality. He welcomed all but feared none. Texas is a better place because Jim served the State of Texas in so many capacities. Kent Hance

Nan,
I always looked up to your Dad and admired his achievements in Texas Politics. Over the years, I would call him occasionally or he would stop by the dealership when he came to Kerrville. But it wasn't until I went to visit him in Austin several years ago that I truly gained an appreciation and understood the depth of leadership and guidance he had given Texas during his time as a State Representative and Chairman of the Railroad Commission. I will always remember that afternoon, the great stories and that "Epic" Texas painting he had commissioned that hung in his office at the Railroad Commission.
Thinking of you and your family during this time of sorrow.

I send condolences and love to Jim's family. I, like so many others, share your sadness. Jim was a political mentor both to my husband, Lynn, and then later to me. Having served with him on the Railroad Commission, I had many opportunities to witness his quick wit, political acumen, rugged commitment to any cause he believed in and his genuine love for the state of Texas. We lost a friend and true legend when Jim Nugent left this world.

Jim was certainly one of the finest individuals with whom I had the privilege to serve in the Texas legislature. He was a giant of integrity. Profound sympathy to the family members.

Fresh out of law school I began work as an attorney at the Railroad Commission during Chairman Nugent's last five years at the agency. I knew at the time that it was a rare opportunity and honor to work with such a skilled lawyer and public servant. He demanded the Commission's lawyers be prepared and give straight answers when presenting cases to the Commissioners. He motivated you to do your best. I have many fond memories of interacting with him at the Commission. May God bless him.

As a former employee I never got to know Jim that well. My first 5 year service award was from Jim. I got to know him a lot better when we would go to the community pool at St. David's hospital for therapy and just good fellowship. He was a good man and he will be missed.

I knew the name Jim Nugent as a leading force in Texas politics from my youth, but I first met him in 1999 as the new provost at Schreiner University, on whose board he served. During the 16 years of my presidency, Jim was the individual I visited more than any other, I suppose. For most of those years he was a goldmine of information about Texas politics. He loved to tell about his latest find-- a good pair of shoes, a spitoon, a painting-- that he had acquired at an estate sale. He was also a generous friend and supporter of Schreiner. Jim was tough and had high standards. He wanted to see each year how his endowment stood in relation to the changing CPI, so our annual visit in June centered on that topic. But many times it was just a matter of catching up and me hearing stories. In his later years, Jim mellowed greatly, and I can hear clearly a simple sentence he would always say at some point in our visit, "I'm so glad you came by." Jim Nugent was a complex man with much going on in his brain and his heart. I was privileged to become a friend. Rest in peace, Jim.

Rest in Peace, Mr. Chairman. We all learned from you and are better for having been in your orbit. Our Pride has lost our Lion; our country has lost a true Patriot. I will treasure our times together and the wisdom you gave.

I learned much from Chairman Nugent in my years as a young lawyer at the Railroad Commission. In matters of state government, law, and politics, he possessed a set of skills one rarely sees combined in one person. I'm grateful for that experience and send positive thoughts and prayers to his family.
