GAEDE, David L., Lt. Col. USAF Ret. age 95, of Dayton, passed away Wednesday, March 5, 2014. A graduate of Ohio State University Class of 1940, David served 23 years in the Army Air Corps and retired from the United States Air Force. He was stationed at Pearl Harbor when it was attacked on December 7, 1941. David flew as a navigator in B-17 Flying Fortress Bombers. He participated in The Battle of Midway in 1942 and later was in the Battle of Guadalcanal, 3 campaigns in the Solomon Islands and 60 combat missions over Korea in B-29 Superfortress Bombers. David proudly earned a Silver Star, 4 Distinguished Flying Crosses, 7 Air Medals and 2 Purple Hearts. He was one of the Charter Members of American Legion Post 598. He was Post Chaplain for over 7 years as well as Chaplain of VFW Post 9927 in Kettering. David was a real estate broker and was an author, poet and actor. He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Olga Gaede, his wife of 41 years, Rudi Gaede, his sister, Geraldine Gaede, and his brothers, John Gaede, Albert Gaede, Gerald Gaede and Roland Gaede, who both died tragically as babies. David is survived by his nephews, Brant Gaede of Tucson, AZ, Marc Gaede of La Canada, CA and Reed Gaede of Orlando, FL, and numerous great nephews and nieces. A funeral service will be at 2pm on March 18, 2014 at Routsong Funeral Home, 2100 E. Stroop Rd, Kettering, OH. David is privileged and honored to be buried at Arlington National Cemetery at a later date. Appreciation to the staff of Walnut Creek and Hospice of Dayton. In lieu of flowers contributions in David's memory may be made to American Legion Post 598, 5700 Kentshire Dr, Kettering, OH 45440. Condolences may be sent to the family by visiting www.routsong.com

Sorry to read of the passing of Mr. Gaede. I had the honor of meeting him just once back on June 12, 2010 when he went on Honor Flight, He signed my WWII Memorial book "David L. Gaede Pearl Harbor Veteran 4th Recon Sq." Condolences to his family and friends and to all the WWII veterans Bless Em All...Bless Em All... Jeffrey Miller Dayton Ohio
