News Death Notice

BARNEY, Jack W. age 90 of Vandalia, passed away Sunday, January 19, 2014 at Good Samaritan Hospital after a brief illness. He was born November 26, 1923 in Dayton, OH, son of the late Harry E. & Edna (West) Barney. Jack was a graduate of Roosevelt High School, Class of 1941 where he enjoyed a stellar athletic career as a standout basketball and baseball player. On May 11, 1943 he proudly joined the United States Marine Corp. Following his military service, Jack attended The Ohio State University, Class of 1949. After graduation, he worked several years in construction and built numerous homes in partnership with his father. In 1961, Jack found his calling and started his own business, still known today as Vandalia Rental. He retired in 1986 at the age of 63, but not before passing his entrepreneurial spirit on to each of his children as he helped nurture and guide each of them into their own successful business ventures. Preceded in death by 2 brothers, Jack is survived by his wife, Marcelline, whom he married on April 14, 1951; 5 children, Randy Barney (Kathy) of New Carlisle, Sandra Niles (Jeff) of Troy, Mike Barney of Troy, Jeff Barney (Fonda) of Huber Heights, and Greg Barney (Brenda) of Vandalia; 11 grandchildren, Kurt, Kris, Ken, Scott, Sarah, Stephanie, Adam, Jenna, Cole, Austin & Clay; and 2 great-grandchildren, Patric & Kyle. Private services will be held for Mr. Barney's family. Interment will be held at Dayton Memorial Park Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to St. Christopher Catholic Church in Jack's memory. Arrangements entrusted to Morton & Whetstone Funeral Home, Vandalia.
