AF MSGT Phillip Ellsworth age 69, of Brookville, OH, passed away Tuesday, September 24, 2013, after a courageous battle with cancer. Phil graduated from Tippecanoe HS in 1961, where he played football, basketball and ran track. He also participated in the band, choir, the school play. He attended Kent State University for a short time, and then joined the United States Air Force
. He retired as a Master Sergeant after a 20 year career. During his military commitment, he served two tours in Vietnam. His military career began as an aircraft mechanic in the KC-135 program, moving into Strategic Air Command and the B-52 program. He graduated from the Non-Commissioned Officer Academy at Barksdale A.F.B., Louisiana. He finished his military career at the 15th Air Force Headquarters, located at March A.F.B, Riverside, Ca. He was a member of The American Legion, Post 707 (Englewood), a member of the Masonic Lodge, and Scottish Rite. He also was an avid sports fan, athlete, and coach. His greatest passion was watching his grandkids compete in athletics and attend their school activities. He was also known for his love for dancing and would be the highlight of the dance floor by leading the train. He was preceded in death by his parents, Harold and Mary Scherer. Survived by his wife, Kathleen Scherer (Brookville), son and daughter-in-law, Marty and Kelly Scherer (Brookville) , daughter and son-in-law, Dawn and Mike Mattingly (Excelsior, MN), Beloved PoPo to Sydney,Tyler, and Summer Scherer, and Samantha and Ryan Mattingly, sister and brother-in-law, Barbara and Ned Booher,(Riverside, CA), special cousins Jack and Brenda Brands,sisters-in-law,nieces,nephews,and friends.
