News Death Notice

LEWIS, Vernon E. "Vern" died peacefully at Walnut Creek Nursing Center on July 4, 2013. He was born August 17, 1925 in Colorado Springs, Colorado, son of James B. Lewis, Jr. and Marie Philips Lewis. He had one brother, James A. Lewis, who along with his parents, predeceased him. Vern is survived by his wife of 29 years, Trudy, and her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren, all of whom were dear to him and whom he considered to be part of his family. He is also survived by his son, Thomas W. Lewis (Susan) and their two children, J. Walker Lewis and Jensen Lewis of Germantown, TN. Vern was raised in Pekin, Illinois where he graduated from high school in 1943. Following graduation he enlisted in the Navy where he served in naval aviation until the end of WWII. He then attended the University of Illinois and graduated in 1948. Vern's work career spanned nearly 32 years and was almost exclusively in industrial relations at General Motors. Vern retired in 1980 and continued his longtime interest in volunteer work on behalf of numerous civic organizations. These included the United Way of Dayton for which he served as campaign chairman and President, Boy Scouts of America, Red Cross, and Salvation Army. Vern had a lifelong interest in Thomas Jefferson and like Mr. Jefferson passed on the 4th of July. Donations may be made on Vern's behalf to Hospice of Dayton. At Vern's request, his body has been donated to the WSU School of Medicine and at his request no public memorial service is planned.
