Michael Greenwood Obituary

Family-Placed Obituary

GREENWOOD, Michael L. age 62, died Sunday, November 19, 2006 following a battle with lung cancer. He is the first son of Betty Greenwood and the late Lloyd Greenwood and is survived by his mother, Betty Greenwood; and by his beloved brother, Glenn Greenwood with whom he shared a close love and friendship. His children and grandchildren: daughter, Gina Greenwood and her son Forest Greenwood Govedare from Chewelah, Washington; son, Todd Greenwood also of Chewelah, Washington; son, Joseph Greenwood Stidham, from Fairborn; his niece, Jackie Greenwood; and his cousins, Carolyn Terrill; Dr. CheeChee Rose and Buddy Rose both pastors. He found much comfort in knowing and loving Janice Stidham. Michael spent his early career in the Navy, where he got the opportunity to sharpen his already strong cooking skills learned from his grandmother McGriff. Michael loved to cook, and especially loved to regale everyone with his Navy cooking stories! Here in Dayton, Michael worked for his mother at the Cascades on Salem Avenue and for Hudson Motors on Main Street. Michael was a life-long Dayton resident, except for a few wonderful, fun years in Florida spent working in real-estate and at the famous Don Cesar resort in Saint Petersburg. It was there he was able to indulge his love of deep-sea fishing and of simply being in and around the ocean. In Dayton, he leaves a home-improvement business where he spent much of his time building beautiful custom-made furniture. Like his father, Lloyd Greenwood and his grandfather, Amos McGriff, Michael was a talented and natural woodworker able to build with his hands most anything his creative mind could envision. With his fix-it ability and with his kind heart, Michael always had some "honey-do" project going for someone. Adding to his enjoyment of woodworking and fixing things was his equal love of going to the gambling boats and in playing Texas Hold'em with his brother Glenn and the gang over at John and Sandy's. But most of all, Michael was a great friend to everyone he met, evidenced by all the calls, cards, letters, and e-mails he received throughout his 11-month illness. His quick wit and sweet heart made him extremely popular and well-loved. He's quite a remarkable man - one you'd never ever forget. We must mention how wonderful the VA was to Michael throughout his illness. To Dr. Seshadri, his oncologist, the family extends their deepest and warmest gratitude for her special kindness and care. We'll always remember your tears as you delivered the most devastating news anyone would ever have to deliver to another human being. And to Hospice - words cannot express our deep gratitude for the constant attention and tender care given to Michael and to us as we navigated through a very difficult and almost unbearable experience. "Michael, you are my first baby, my love, and my joy. For me, this world will never be the same without you. I'll miss our noon phone calls, our trips to the boat, and the deep connection that only and mother and son could share. I love you more that I know how to express. So I'll only say that I'll see you later, because as I told you as you drew your last breaths, I'll join you when the Lord calls me." Michael's memorial service will be held on Monday, November 27, 2006 at Dominic's Italian Restaurant located at 1066 S. Main Street, Dayton, Ohio 45409, 937-222-4801. Services will begin at 6pm. The family would enjoy hearing stories about Michael, so we'll be passing a cordless microphone through the audience to share those memories. Anyone who would like to speak is welcomed and encouraged to do so - and the funnier the better! Arrangements in care of TOBIAS FUNERAL HOME - FAR HILLS CHAPEL. Condolences and messages may be sent via e-mail to Betty Greenwood at [email protected], to Dominic's or to tobiasfuneralhome.com. In lieu of flowers, the family would so appreciate a contribution to Hospice in the name of Michael Greenwood for the benefit of families faced with situations like ours.

Our hearts goes out to all of Mike's family at this sad time. Having lost a son and brother also we know the pain you all are going thru. We will always remember the good times we had with Mike when he was stationed in Pensacola. Until Mike we had never heard of anyone getting sunburn on the bottom of his feet!
Our thoughts remain with you.

Dearest Glenn, I am so very sorry about hearing of the loss of Mike. I haven't seen you since since Daddy's passing but Mike and you have always been in my thoughts and prayers. As tears cloud my eyes in memories of you both, I want to say I'm truely saddened for what you and your Mother are and have been going through this past year. Please take comfort in knowing that Mike is now with our heavenly father and our wonderful earthly Dad, and all of our family and friends that the Lord has taken home. For they are at peace now and with no pain and we shall join them again. Even though we were only half brothers and sisters, Gerry, Grant, Gena and I, have always loved you both as true brothers. I wish I could be there for you. May God Bless you and hold you in his hands now and in the days to come.

It was my pleasure to serve Mr. Greenwood in the VA Anticoagulatin Clinic. He was a kind and warm person with a gentle sense of humor. I looked forward to his appointments because I always felt better after spending time with him. (sure hope he benefitted from the time as well.)

Dear Aunt Betty,
You are a remarkable woman with many strentghs. I have seen in you a strength that can only come from the Lord. What a wonderful testimony you have been through all of this. Just to know that Michael is with the Lord now is so comforting. No words can express the loss that you are feeling. Our love and prayers are with you daily. What a blessing Susie has been. All those difficult visits to the VA Center - God knows all that she has done and He, I know, will bless her richly for her compassion and care. Jesus said "I will never leave you nor forsake you" He left us these words because He knew we would face many trails in this life, but "greater is He that is within you than he that is in the world". God is so good! Michael had such a sweet side to him, I know I have told you how he took the time to help me when Hon died and I had to change schools. He bought me a sewing box, which I still have, and all the items I needed for my sewing class. No one asked him to do it, he just saw a need and took care of that need. Someday there will be a magnificent reunion and we will be able to see all of our loved ones and friends that have gone on before us. "What a day - glorious day that will be!" God bless you and keep you in His care!
All our Love,
Mike and Carolyn Terrill
