HOKE, John M. 8/20/1931 - 3/26/2012 Passed away peacefully on Monday, March 26th at the University of Michigan Hospital surrounded by his loving family. John was born August 30, 1931 in Darke County, son of John Moses and Mary Hoke. John married the former Patricia Saben on November 22, 1952. He is survived by his four children: Terre Manning (Alan), Jon Hoke (Jody), Brady Hoke (Laura), and Heidi Thomas (Greg), and 11 grandchildren. Alison Leever (Matt), Nicholas Manning (Suzy), Natalie Snell (Jarrett); Mallory (fiance Mark Laumann), Kyle, Carly and Kendall Hoke; Kelly Hoke; Hayden, Quinn, and Brady Thomas and great-grandchildren, Olivia Leever and John Manning. John graduated from Miami University and attained his masters degree from Xavier University. John worked in the Mad River School District where he served as a teacher, coach, and administrator for 15 years. John then owned and operated a school photography business for many years. John's commitment to and love for his family were felt by all. On behalf of John, his family would like to thank all of those who touched his life and the lives of his family. Pat and their children would like to express how blessed they have been to have had him as a loving husband and father. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to Faith Lutheran Church in memory of John M. Hoke. John is survived by Basil and Phyllis Morrison (sister-in-law), Phyllis and James Harwood (sister), Dona Ignet (sister), Shirley Hoilman (sister), Janice Davis (sister) and preceded in death by brother Gerald, and sisters, Lois Branigan and Marijean Stiefel. Memorial services will be Sun. April 1st, 2012, 1:30pm, Faith Lutheran Church, 3315 Martel Drive, Dayton, OH. Visitation 1 hour prior to services (12:30-1:30pm)

My Symmpathy to all of the Hoke family. A great man who will be missed by many. One of my fond memories is riding to Catechism early Saturday morning with him and Jondy during 7th and 8th grade....none of us wanted to be up that early. Oh the many school pictures that he took, boy did I feel special knowing the photographer!! You are all in my thoughts and prayers during this time.

Dear Heidi and Family, It was so sad to learn of your father's passing. But I know you all have been there supporting and loving him through his struggle. He loved you kiddo and loved your boys! Marianne and I were so sorry to hear of John's passing. He was such a great guy. The best compliment I can pay is I always looked forward to his visits. He was great to be with. brady~so sorry to hear of the passing of your father. i will pray for your entire family. I know your father is in heaven watching down on his kids and just smiling. he'll always be the "angel on your shoulder." And when you play your ball games. he will being up there rooting for you. JOHN HOKE WAS PROBABLY THE GREATEST INFLUENCE IN MY YOUNG LIFE. THROUGHOUT HIGH SCHOOL, HE WAS MY FOOTBALL COACH, TEACHER OF MANY SUBJECTS AND SENIOR ADVISER. HE KEPT ME ON THE RIGHT PATH AND I KNEW HE CARED EVEN WHEN HE POKED ME IN THE CHEST AND CALLED ME A JAMOKE.
I RAN INTO HIM 20 YEARS AFTER HIGH SCHOOL AND THANKED HIM FOR ALL HE HAD GIVEN ME. SOMEHOW, THANKS DIDN'T SEEM ENOUGH. REST IN PEACE MR. HOKE.

Pat and family, Skip and I were so sorry to hear about your loss of a great husband and father. It is not too often that someone has the same boss in two different jobs, but I was lucky to have had John as my boss twice. I will always remember what fun I had doing school pictures - even getting up at four in the morning. John always made it interesting and sometimes very challenging but always FUN. He introduced me to the world of little plastic combs, cinnamon buns at Germantown High School, every school in Defiance, Ohio, and fried bologna sandwiches, just to name a few. I hope that he was able to enjoy some of last fall's games at Michigan. I have impressed my Michigan friends with my connection to the father of Michigan's football coach. I remember the many times John and I spent talking sports. I'm sure he was as proud as can be of his big family. He talked about family a lot and seemed to really enjoy being the patriarch.

Love to all of you. I keep thinking about when Mr. Hoke came up here to Oregon to meet with my principal about school pictures. My principal was trying to introduce him to me, and he said, "Leigh? Well, I've known her since she was knee high to a grasshopper. I probably changed her diapers!" It was a little hard to look professional in that meeting, but it did my heart good. I loved him like my own family.

So sorry to hear of your Dad's passing. We had such a nice talk sharing stories about his wonderful family, the fun had with my mother-in-law at Beverly Garden's School when she was principal, and, of course, the great pictures he took at the recitals. He had such a good outlook and trust in Dr. Romer and along with your Mom gave very meaningful words of hope. I will be forver appreciative of that time spent with the both of them. You were blessed to have such a fine father.

Dear Aunt Pat, Terre, Heidi, Jondy, and Brady--When I was a tiny little girl Uncle John gave me a nickname. And even as I grew older, he still called my by it. That nickname is part of my email address, it is my my Susan G. Komen Team name, and I have local friends who will often call my by it. Although I can no longer speak with Uncle John, he will ALWAYS be with me and be a part of me.

I want to express my sincere condolences to the Hoke Family. He loved and was very prideful of his family. John was a gem of a person, and I am lucky to have gotten to know him. As a sub in the Mad River District, he truly made our days better when he was in our building. He had a unique way of dealing with students.
