I was very sorry to hear about the passing of this wonderful man, Chaplain Brown. I worked at the Lebanon Correctional Institution from 1968-1970 and he was a very strong witness to the inmates about the love of God and His forgiving nature. I listened to his radio program also and he was very inspirational there too.
May God richly bless you in your time of sorrow. I know that Chaplain Brown is happy to be with his loved ones who have gone on ahead of him and most of all to be with his Savior.

Dearest Elaine, Michael and Rita, Sharon, Vicki and Bill and Sister Evelyn,

How saddened I was to hear from Joy yesterday that Chaplain Brown had passed, but soon realized how happy he must be to be with his beloved Inez once again and to see his Savior face to face.

I first met Chaplain Brown on Easter Sunday morning, 1962, at Lebanon Correctional Institution. Our church trio had been invited to sing special songs for the Service.
Phyllis Smith invited Chaplain and Inez to attend our Mother-Daughter Banquet as guest speakers. Of course, they brought you four older children with them. Everyone fell in love with all of you. You were so well behaved as you have always been throughout your whole lives. They were so proud of you. But when Joy came along she was the Joy of their lives as well as the other grandchildren who came later. You were truly Blessed children to have Chaplain and Inez as parents.

Chaplain Brown was the perfect Chaplain for LeCI. He served his Lord and the men at the prison faithfully and always with respect. He was truly Ordained by God and a ‘Soldier of the Cross’. The men loved him for his friendship, leadership, humor and humility as well as making each one feel loved as a human being. Though an outcast by many of their friends and family, condemned by the courts for their crimes, Chaplain Brown gently presented the plan of salvation, God sent the conviction, and they were led to a new life of freedom with hope through Jesus Christ. About three times a year Chap would pull out that sickly rubber chicken. Somehow the word would get around the prison that Chap would be presenting ‘the rubber chicken sermon’ and the Sanctuary would be filled to capacity. At the time he would make his point of relating the sin of stealing to that of robbing God he would reach in his pocket and pull out that skinny chicken. The laughter and applause of 400 plus men would be thunderous.

I shall treasure the times I was privileged to volunteer as music director with Chaplain Brown, Chaplain Schmieder, Chaplain Graves, Chaplain Stephens and all the volunteer singers at LeCI. The men loved singing in the choir every Sunday morning, revivals, singing a joint concert with the Amish choir, and presenting the two Annual Concerts in the Spring and at Christmas to their parents, family and friends. They looked forward each year to the Otterbein Home Mens’ Chorus led by Bill Jefferis and Howard Longmire
the pianist Wendy Sesler and Liz Zornes, Patti and Roger Lakes and the other outside guest for the Christmas Program. The Chaplains did so much to prepare the men for the outside world as a Christian and an honorable man of society.

Chap was presented many awards and accolades in this life for his efforts, but can you just imagine the rewards he and his beloved faithful partner, Inez, will enjoy in Heaven.
He was truly Ordained by God and carried out his mission on earth with fervor.
As Jim Hill wrote “What a Day That Will Be”!!!

God Bless you. If you ever need me you have my number. Lovingly, Lois

To Chaplain Brown's family, though here in this life, we treat the passing of such a dear loved one as loss, and it is, we know that in heaven, it is gain. The angels in Heaven are singing at the joy of Chaplain Brown joining his savior and Lord. I know of few other men who worked so tirelessly in the service of their calling. Chaplain Brown is a man of God whom I continue to look up to, especially in character. His perseverence and integrity made him a model of men who call themselves God's servant.
I remember him from the many, many times my mother, Lois Jestice, would make me attend services at LCI while she played the keyboards or directed the men's choir. Chaplain Brown would always smile and greet me and make me feel safe and welcome. God grant you all the comfort in knowing your father, grandfather, great-grandfather, lived his life well, and he spends eternity where he always aspired.
