News Death Notice

SHORTAL, Robert B. passed away on November 2, 2012. Bob was born to the late Robert and Gertrude (Koche) Shortal on October 28, 1944. One of six children, Bob grew up in Detroit, MI and attended Salesian High School where he excelled in sports and paved the way toward a football scholarship at the University of Dayton. He received city, state, and national recognition for his talents on the field during high school and college, eventually being inducted into the University of Dayton Hall of Fame in 1984. Bob received his under graduate degree in 1967 and after working at the Inland Division of General Motors and serving in the US Army during the Vietnam War, Bob returned to UD and received a graduate degree in education. Bob worked at Wright Patterson Air Force Base and after retiring from the Base, at Tiburon Associates. During his years at UD and through his work career, Bob cultivated long-lasting friendships and was dedicated to serving his community and church including volunteering to be Santa at Polen Farm, coaching grade school and high school sports and organizing many events. Bob was a devoted husband to Vickie for 35 years, a loving father to his daughters and son-in-law, and enjoyed being a grandfather. He touched the lives of many people with his thoughtfulness and generosity. He is survived by his wife, daughters Leah Pekarik (Scott) and Erin Shortal, grandson Robert Pekarik, his brother, Tom Shortal (Jeanne), sisters Mary Giles (Chuck), Margaret Bronder (Dave), Monica Tremonti (Larry), and Maureen Golting (Eric) and his extended family of caring nieces, nephews, and cousins. Thanks to the doctors and staff at Sycamore Glen Nursing Center, Miamisburg, Ohio and The Hospice of Dayton for providing loving care to Bob and his family during his illness. Visitation will be held from 4-8pm on Wednesday November 7th at Westbrock Funeral Home, 5980 Bigger Road, Kettering, Ohio 45440. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Albert the Great Catholic Church, 3033 far Hills Avenue, Kettering, Ohio 45429 at 12:00 noon Thursday November 8th. In lieu of flowers contributions can be made to the University of Dayton Football Program, Attn: Brian Tracy, Director of Development, Athletics, 300 College Park, Dayton, OH 45469-2964 or The Hospice of Dayton, 324 Wilmington Avenue, Dayton, OH 45420.
