GROSS-JOHNSON, Mrs. Wilkie May dedicated wife, loving mother and vibrant woman, was surrounded by her family, when she succumbed to kidney failure on January 5, 2013 at the McCall Hospice House near Greenville, SC. She was born in Evergreen, Al, but spent the majority of her young life in Pittsburgh, PA, being raised by her father, George 'Popsi' Johnson and her mother Eula 'Deedee' (Salter) Johnson. She attended Fifth Ave HS, was inducted into the National Honor Society, graduated with honors, and then from Carnegie Business College. On Christmas Day, 1954 she married Charles R. Gross, the love of her life, then relocated to Dayton, OH, where they raised four children: Charles Michael, Cheryl Lee, Juliet Wilkie and Carla Joellen, After years of service with the Dayton Police Dept., Wilkie retired and later relocated to Greenville SC. with her daughter Juliet who provided her loving care throughout her illness. Wilkie is preceded in death by husband, Charles 'Chuck'; sister, Eloise Claughton; mother, Eula; father, George and many loving aunts, uncles and relatives. She is survived by her sister Eunice Walker (Norman); children: Michael Gross (Michela), Cheryl Mayes, Juliet (Carl) and Carla Pettiford (John), (17) loving grandchildren; (14) beautiful great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and many caring relatives and friends. She will be surely missed. A memorial service will be held 12:00 Noon, FRIDAY, JANUARY 18, 2013 at the ST. PAUL AME ZION CHURCH 4544 Laurel Dr., Reverend Phyllis D. Lemon, Pastor with Pastor Titus Patrick, officiating and Julian Ricardo James, Eulogist. Interment: Dayton National Cemetery.
