News Death Notice

SHORT, Virginia M. 92, of Bellbrook, passed away peacefully April 17, 2013 at her home, "Sugar Grove". Preceded in death by her husband of 42 years, W. Paul Short, and her mother Mary Westfall. She is survived by her son Douglas with whom she has resided since her husbands passing in 1992 in her own "Mother Suite". She was very active until 5 years ago when she suffered a stroke which triggered dementia/Alzheimer's. Virginia came to Dayton in 1938 after graduating from Greenville High School where she lived with her maternal grandparents. She was employed by DP&L during the day and Rike's at night. She married W. Paul Short April 17, 1949. Their only child Douglas was born in 1954. They moved to Bellbrook in 1958 when Paul was employed by Lawrence and Linda Lou Bledsoe as construction foreman. Virginia was a stay-at-home mom, operating a ceramic studio in her home until she went to work at SRL in 1970. She retired in 1985 from WPAFB Landing Gear Test Facility where she worked as Buyer. She took care of her mother with Alzheimer's as well. Paul & Virginia traveled extensively. After Paul's death, Virginia resumed a full and active life; golfing, square dancing, and traveling with her sister-in-law Ruby Brown. She was a regular at Kettering Rec Center for Thursday Night Euchre. She is fondly remembered for her constant pleasant demeanor, baking sugar cookies, cheesecakes and peanut butter fudge. Virginia is also survived by her nephew and family William Brown (Marcia), William Brown II (Wendy), all of Trenton, and Robert Brown (Denise) of Monroe. Doug gratefully wishes to thank the live-in caregivers who made it possible to remain in her home until the end; Stefan & Katie Vasiloff, Connie Wilson, Margaret Hibbenbotham, Garrison Tyree, and Dr. Jerry Clark who slowed the progression of her Alzheimer's. A special thanks to all the wonderful, caring people from Hospice of Dayton. We appreciate their kind and loving care of mother. The family will receive friends Sunday April 21 from 4-6 pm at CONNER & KOCH Home for Funerals, Cremations and Life Celebrations, 92 W. Franklin St. (S.R. 725), Bellbrook with funeral services immediately following at 6:00 pm. Dan Fant officiating. Private interment in Bellbrook Cemetery. In memory of Virginia, contributions may be made to Hospice of Dayton, 324 Wilmington Ave., Dayton, Ohio 45420.
