OWENS, PhD., James M. 83, of Springfield, died Tuesday, July 9, 2013 at his residence. He was born April 21, 1930, in Xenia, Ohio, the son of Elmer W. "Bud" and Jessie Boblett Owens. He graduated from Xenia Central High School in 1948 and was proud to have been senior class president, football captain, and the first Rocky Thomas Award winner. He served in the US Army, during the Korean War in Germany, as a trombonist in the First Infantry Division Band. He was a musician union member for over 50 years and played in several local bands and jazz clubs. Dr. Owens was a graduate of Wittenberg College, Bowling Green and Toledo University. He was chief psychologist and director of psychological services for the Montgomery County Family Court Center and Juvenile Court. He taught and supervised students of Wright State University School of Professional Psychology. He is survived by a special friend, Cathy Underwood, by a close friend and caregiver, Linda Carter, both of Springfield, and by numerous cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Kathleen (English) Owens, on May 29, 2007, and by a brother, Elmer W. Owens, III. Services will be held at 11am, Friday, July 12, 2013, at Neeld Funeral Home, 1276 N. Detroit St., Xenia. Visitation will be held from 10am Friday, until service time.
