News Death Notice

SINGER, James Edward Centerville, Ohio, passed away Saturday, February 8, 2014 at Kettering Medical Center after a brief illness. He is survived by his wife, Willa Lee Basford Singer, one daughter, Melody Noelle Singer Santillan, son-in-law, Edgar Roberto Santillan, one sister, Willa Ann Feldman and brother-in-law, James Edward Feldman of Illinois. He was preceded in death by his parents, Hazel Chenoweth Singer and Edward Singer of Akron, Ohio and his mother-in-law, Jessie Butcher Basford and father-in-law, Lucian Basford of Seaman, Ohio. He received a Bachelor Degree in Engineering from the University of Akron and was a member of the Phi Delta Theta Fraternity. He also received a Master's Degree in Management as a "Sloan Fellow" at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and a Master's Degree in Business Administration from Xavier University, Cincinnati. He was an active military officer in the United States Air Force, obtaining the rank of Captain before transitioning to Civil Service at Wright Patterson Air Force Base. At WPAFB, he was employed as Systems Program Director, Aeronautical Systems Division. While there, he managed complex, multi-million dollar development and production programs, including those associated with the F-111 and Night Hawk Helicopter. He won the General Stewart Award for Excellence in Program Management. After "retiring" from WPAFB, he worked in the Private Sector as Chief Technology Officer (CTO) and System Program Director for local companies. He was Past President, Board Chairman, and eight-year Board Member, National Aerospace Electronics Conference, Member of MENSA, Miami Valley Communications Council Delegate and past Chairman, Editor of Engineering publication WAVEGUIDE, and Past President and member, Centerville Rotary Club; Assistant District Governor, three years and Paul Harris Fellow. His love for Centerville and its citizens led him to seek election as a Centerville City Councilman. He has the distinguished honor of being the longest consecutively elected official in the State of Ohio, serving 37 years on Centerville Council, with six of those years as Deputy-Mayor. He was a Graduate, Leadership Dayton Program, Registered Professional Engineer State of Ohio, and Life Senior Member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE). He will be greatly missed by his Family, Friends, and Community. Visitation will be held Sunday, February 16, 2014 from 2-6 PM at the TOBIAS FUNERAL HOME-FAR HILLS CHAPEL, 5471 Far Hills Avenue at Rahn Road, Dayton Ohio. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at Incarnation Church, Centerville, Ohio at 1 pm on Tuesday February 18, 2014. A second visitation with Services to follow will be held at 12 pm on Wednesday February 19, 2014 at Calvary Church of God, Seaman, Ohio with Pastor Steve Warnock officiating. Interment at Mt.
