News Death Notice

SMITH, Marsha C. (Kline) age 62, of Xenia, passed away Friday, February 28, 2014, at her residence. She was born February 29, 1952, in Xenia, Ohio to the late Raymond V. and J. Catherine (Hopping) Kline. Marsha is survived by her beloved husband of 39 years, Mike; children: Shanna J. Smith, Maryssa C. (Smith) and Jordan Misamore (son-in-law), and Jarrod L. Smith; sisters and brothers-in-law: Rebecca A. and Kenneth B. Macaluso and Martha C. and Bruce K. Bauer; as well as numerous extended family members and close friends. Marsha devoted her entire life to Xenia. She attended Spring Hill Elementary and Central Junior High and graduated from Xenia High School in 1970. After earning her teaching degree from Ohio Northern University, she returned to Xenia to begin her 38-year career in 1974, teaching mathematics at Warner Junior High School before moving to Xenia High School in 1993. Throughout her tenure, she served as a positive role model, helping all her students strive for excellence and earning the respect of all who were blessed to know her. Marsha's dedication to teaching was evident, having received the Howard Post Excellence in Education Distinguished Graduate Award a total of 12 times. In addition to her role as a teacher, Marsha was active over the years on various educational committees and served as a girls' basketball and volleyball coach. She supported Xenia Community Schools outside the classroom as well by attending numerous sporting and fine arts events. Marsha was a proud member of the Memorial United Presbyterian Church and enjoyed singing in the choir. She also participated in the Circle of Victory and served as the bookkeeper for Kline Engineering, Inc. Marsha's family would like to recognize those who offered exceptional care throughout her battle with cancer, including Miami Valley Hospital's fifth floor oncology staff, Hospice of Dayton nurses and aides, and the Care Flight Team. A celebration honoring Marsha's resurrection will be held at 1 PM Saturday, March 8, 2014, at Memorial United Presbyterian Church with Pastor Kelley W. Shin officiating. She will be interred privately at Spring Valley Cemetery. Visitation will be held Thursday, March 6 from 4-7 PM at Memorial United Presbyterian Church. However, Xenia Community School Educators and Staff are invited to gather early at the church, starting at 3 PM Thursday. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Marsha Smith Memorial Scholarship Fund, c/o Security National Bank. (Services in care of McColaugh Funeral Home, Inc., Xenia).
