DEETER, Ann Age 104 of Kettering passed away Monday, April 7, 2014 at the Hospice of Dayton. She was born July 17, 1909 on the Old Deeter Farm in Miami County. She attended grammar school in one of the last little red schoolhouses. Following graduation from Covington High School in 1927 she left for Dayton, rented a room at the YWCA, and attended Miami Jacobs Business College, where she studied accounting and business law. She visited the Dayton Art Institute for the first time in 1929, and knew after spending an hour in the Museums Oriental Gallery that this was where she wanted to study and work. Ann received a Diploma of Fine Arts from the School of the Dayton Art Institute, with a major in Design in 1936. Between 1937 and 1973, Ann served as the Art Institute's Registrar. She held this position, which grew in importance over the next 36 years, until the School of the Dayton Art Institute closed in 1973. During her long career, Miss Deeter befriended, advised, mentored and guided 36 graduating classes of students from their first day at art school through four years of studio and art history classes to earning their diplomas and graduating. Miss Deeter will always be remembered for her unwavering commitment to the success of each of her students, and her understanding of art and artists as a way to think about and understand the world in good times and bad She assisted numerous veterans from World War II, the Korean War and the Vietnam War to begin or resume their education at the Dayton Art Institute. And, she gave freely of her time counseling students through personal and financial difficulties, solving problems, and opening doors to graduate school or careers in art. A celebration of her life will be held at the Dayton Art Institute on Sunday, June 1st. Arrangements entrusted to Bradford Connelly Glickler Funeral Home.
