News Death Notice

RUSS, Bernice Calhoun age 84, of Dayton, passed away April 10, 2014 at Hospice of Dayton. Born in Newnan, Georgia, lived in St. Louis, Missouri for 10 years and a resident of Dayton since 1943. Bernice graduated in 1948 from Paul Laurence Dunbar High School and 9 years later obtained a License of Practical Nursing. She was employed at Good Samaritan and later the VA Medical Center, retiring in 1985. Bernice volunteered in the Dayton Public Schools as a "classroom mom". She loved to knit, crotchet, sew and nurture plants and recite the poems of her youth. She had a way with people that formed bonds. Preceded in death by her parents, Robert Sr. and Louella Bostick Calhoun; children, Olivia, Rajar and Karen Renee Stollings (Russ); grandparents, aunts, uncles and many cousins and ex-husband Chester H. Russ, Sr. Left to cherish her memory, her daughters, Cynthia Ann, Marsha, and Debra Lynn; son, Chester Jr. (Minn.); granddaughters, Ryann Russ (S.C.), Keyauna and Amanda Stollings. Home going celebration will be held 1 pm Thursday, April 17, 2014 at Calvary Missionary Baptist Church, 2067 N. Gettysburg Ave. Interment West Memory Gardens. Visitation from10 am to 1 pm. Family will receive friends from 12 to 1 pm. Arrangements entrusted to the House of Wheat Funeral Home, Inc., 2107 N.
