Lowell Dwight BLACK Obituary

News Death Notice

BLACK, Lowell Dwight age 63, of Dayton, died Saturday, July 12, 2014 at Hospice of Dayton. Born February 3, 1951 in Logan County, WV to the late Clifton Thornton Black and Hattie Mae Scott. Lowell attended Marshall University in Huntington, WV and earned his Ph.D. at Ohio State University. He served in the U.S. Army and was a respected historian and scholar of the service of black soldiers in the U. S. military. From 1979 until his death, he was a civilian contractor for the U.S. Air Force, specializing in logistics, working at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base for most of this period. Preceded in death by his beloved wife, Sara Harrington Black; brothers, Clifton, Alvin, Frank, Dan, and Paul Black; sister, Phyllis Mashreque. He is survived by his sons, Ralph and Lawrence Black; grandchildren, Eric, Emily, and Chloë Black; first wife, Mrs. Yolanda Thorn Smith; brothers, Rogers, Fred, Clinton, and Michael Black; sisters, Betty Moore, Marilyn Jackson and Angeline Black; numerous friends and co-workers at Wright-Patterson. Funeral service will be held 1 pm Tuesday, July 22, 2014 at the House of Wheat Funeral Home, Inc., 2107 N. Gettysburg Ave. Pastor Norman Bradfield officiating. Interment Dayton National Cemetery. Visitation from 10 am-1 pm. Family will receive friends from 12-1 pm. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the .
