SHANKS, John T. 88, of Columbus, Indiana, formerly of Bonita Springs, Florida and Dayton, Ohio, passed away Sunday afternoon, April 18, 2010, at Four Seasons Health Center in Columbus, Indiana. He was the devoted husband of his wife of 65 years, Frances Shanks. He was the devoted father of Donna S. Hilker and son-in-law Samuel R. Hilker of Nashville, Indiana. He was also a devoted and loving grandfather to Todd W. Hilker and Holly A. Bonetti. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his dear son, John T. Shanks III. He was born April 10, 1922, in Cleveland, Ohio, the son of the late John and Alice Shanks. He attended Kent State University, interrupting his education to join the Army Air Corps in 1943. He earned his wings and became a pilot serving as a flight instructor at Greenville, Mississippi. He later attended bomber pilot training in the B-24 and was stationed at Mt. Home Air Force Base in Boise, Idaho. He received orders to the Pacific theater when the war ended in 1945. He then attended Ohio State University and graduated with a BS in Business and a Juris Doctorate. He moved his family to Dayton, Ohio and opened his private practice as an Attorney-at-Law in 1949 until his retirement in 1994. He was an avid general aviation pilot and a member of the Quiet Birdmen. Private interment will be at the Dayton National Cemetery at the discretion of the family.
