News Death Notice
SIMMS, Linda Lee of Yellow Springs, Ohio, departed this life on Wednesday, November 30, 2011. Linda was born on October 12, 1947 in Charleston, West Virginia. She was a 1969 graduate of Wilberforce University in Wilberforce, Ohio and a distinguished member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority. Linda leaves a lasting impression in both social services and early childhood education. She worked for Catholic Social Services as the director of Miami Valley Family Care Center. During her thirty years of service, she was a member of the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAYCE). Linda's commitment and dedication guided the center through numerous transformations and achievements including national accreditation. She also was the recipient of the Lifetime Achievement Award from Development Assessment of Young Children (DAYC) for her contributions to early childhood education. Linda is survived by her husband of 44 years, Gerald Simms, her daughters, Leslie (Kelvin) White of Yellow Springs, and Mikasa (Richard) Armstrong of Fairborn; her grandsons, Bryce and Jordan White; her sisters, Murrial (Mark) Berkley of Charlotte, NC, Carol (Scot) Speakman of Yellow Springs, and Mary Francis (Willie) Brooks of Charleston, WV; her nephew Brian Robles and his daughter Brea of Killeen, TX; her step-mother, Donna Stillwell of Charleston, WV; her mother-in-law Elizabeth Simms, cousins Frank (Sharon) Stillwell of Riverside, CA; sisters- in-law, Patricia Greenlea, Jacqueline (Robert) Redman, Judith Simms, Marva Simms, all of Caledonia, NY; bothers- in- law, Thomas (Gloria) Simms of Charlotte, NC, Lewis (Ilene)Simms of Stoughton, MA and a host of nieces and nephews. Linda was preceded in death by her parents Lindon and Thelma Stillwell of Charleston, West Virginia. Service for Linda Simms will be held Monday December 5, 2011 at First Presbyterian Church 314 Xenia Ave Yellow Springs, Ohio. Visitation will be held 2:00-4:00pm and 6:00-9:00pm in West Minister Hall. Funeral will be held on Tuesday December 6, 2011 at 1:00pm at First Presbyterian Church with Reverend Joe Hinds officiating.
