News Death Notice

PURVIS, Captain Theodore B. Jr. USN Ret., 92, passed away on December 20, 2011. Ted was born on September 4, 1919 in Newport News, VA. He was predeceased by his wife of 53 years, Eleanor Doy Purvis. He is survived by his daughter Shelley Blood and her husband Dan of Tampa, daughter Shirley Susich and her husband Tom of Reno, NV, and son Brad and wife Avril of Toano, VA, plus four grandchildren and seven great grandchildren. Captain Purvis served in the US Navy during WWII in the Destroyer Forces in the Atlantic from 1941 to 1944 and in the Pacific in 1945 and 1946 on the cruiser USS Wichita at Okinawa through the Japanese surrender and the repatriation of allied prisoners of war from Nagasaki. Over the next twenty four years he served at sea and ashore in a variety of command and staff positions, including as special assistant to the Assistant Secretary of the Navy and culminating his career as the Deputy Commander of the Defense Electronics Supply Center in Kettering. He retired from the Navy after 29 years in 1969 and moved to the education field, where he served as Director of Personnel Administration at Wright State University until January of 1976 when he and Eleanor moved to Plant City, FL. Ted also served on the Centerville City Schools Board of Education from 1969 until 1973. A memorial service will be held at St. Peter's Episcopal Church, Plant City, FL on December 29, 2011. Arrangements are by Wells Memorial Funeral Home in Plant City.
