Douglas Apple Obituary

News Death Notice

APPLE, Jr., Douglas A. "Dougie" 26, of Dayton, died peacefully while surrounded by his loving family on Friday, February 3, 2012. He was preceded in death by his great grandparents, Ada & Raymond Manson, and his grandfather, Herman Apple. He is survived by his loving mom and dad, Douglas A., Sr. and Sheilah E. (Armstrong) Apple, his loving sisters, Megan Apple, Michelle Hinds, Gwynnie Rotramel, Colleen E. Apple, and Bethie Apple, and brothers, Bryan Hinds, Mike Rotramel, and Alex Grunewald. He was the dearest and most beloved uncle of Bryan Douglas, Patrick, & baby-on-the way Isabella Hinds and Elle & Mikey Rotramel, as well as godfather to Patrick & Mikey. Doug was the cherished grandson of Helen Rosalie Apple and Frank & Gwyn Armstrong. Doug is also survived by many loving aunts, uncles, cousins, and a multitude of friends. His family and friends would like to sincerely thank the compassionate doctors, nurses, and medical staff that have taken care of Dougie over the years. He was a parishioner of St. Henry Parish and graduated from Miamisburg High School, class of 2004. He also attended Sinclair Community College, University of Cincinnati, and the University of Phoenix. He was a diligent and dedicated employee of Soft Touch Car Wash and his treasured Kings Island as "The Supe." For 11 years, Doug was a passionate camper, counselor, and director at Camp Ko-Man-She, sponsored by The Dayton Diabetes Association. He was a compassionate role model to young kids with diabetes. Doug was thankful for the "gift of life" and, through skin and tissue donation, was unselfishly able to return that gift to many others. Doug was recognized as an Outstanding Volunteer for Diabetes Dayton. Doug enjoyed maintaining a fleet of Ford Tauruses until he was able to upgrade to his prized Honda Accord "because that's how I roll." He cherished the time he spent in Hilton Head at Kenny B.'s, Flyer games at UD Arena, Dollar Dogs & beers at Reds' games, fun nights out with "The Crew," and especially the time spent with his buddy, Dad. Doug was a fine, young man who showed many people how to live courageously. He will always be in our hearts. The family will receive friends at the TOBIAS FUNERAL HOME-FAR HILLS CHAPEL, 5471 Far Hills Ave. at Rahn Rd. Tuesday, February 7, 2012, from 5 to 8 pm. Mass of Christian Burial, 11am Wednesday, at St. Henry Catholic Church, 6666 Springboro Pike. Charitable donations can be made in his name to Dayton Children's Medical Center and The Dayton Diabetes Association. In the near future, a scholarship to Camp Ko-Man-She will be established in Dougie's name. DONATE LIFE. Online condolences may be sent to www.tobiasfuneralhome.com.

Dear Doug, Sheilah and family: I was just informed of the news and want to express our sympathies. I recall the many times in the office how Doug would relay the latest happenings and the obvious pride he had in Dougie's accomplishments. Thanks to Doug's sharing I had a vivid sense of the special place Dougie had in the Apple family.

Doug, Sheila and Family, I am so sorry to hear of Dougie's passing. I remember when he was in Jr. High and was first diagnosed with diabetes, and came in to my office with you, Sheila. You were nervous, scared, Doug, it seemed, was neither! Laughing, positive, happy, he and I began our journey. I saw him several times everyday to test his sugar. Sometimes so low I wouldn't let him walk to the cafeteria without a friend at his side! He would say "I'm fine"!! And laugh and walk over to lunch. He was a fun-loving, positive, sweet person. He will be missed by so many. My heartfelt sympathy is with you.

If I could write through tears, I would tell you more, but let me just say this...feeling lost, scared, still overwhelmed from the initial diagnosis and unsure of what would come, there I was...in the midst of leaving my 7 yr old son at Diabetes Camp where neither I, nor he had ever set foot. He was excited, but scared, eager, but shy, willing, but reserved...and then, Counselor Doug came over to us. Having read the terror on my face he said, "Mom, it will be okay. He is going to be surrounded by diabetics. There will be no way he'll be lost, afraid, forgotten or unmonitored. Now, that being said, he will be tired, dirty, sweaty, hungry and waiting for daylight to come do it all again, but I promise, he will feel AWESOME. You go, leave him here to feel like a normal kid again.". He then told me that his own health was suffering, but he wouldn't miss camp, nope, wouldn't miss camp for anything. Oh, my God, bless his family. How they must hurt, how their hearts must be broken. I only met him two mornings of day camp last summer and my heart aches for his soul leaving this world.
May his soul rest in peace and may our Lord bless you as you continue without him. There is no doubt that he will be remembered and indeed, will live on in the hearts of the many campers he inspired to live life with great, brave, bold COURAGE!

I had the honor of knowing Doug through Kings Island. I have never known someone more vivacious, and selfless. His smile was contagious, and even if he had just come from a procedure in the hospital, he would only bring his most positive energy and enthusiasm around others. He always made it a point to bring out the best in others, and make sure everyone was having a great time.

I was honored to be Dougie's God Mother and never for a moment did doubt his true faith in our loving God. When I thinking of Dougie, I think of big blues eyes and a deep devotion to his God, family and friends. I am in awe of his wonderful life and I know that he has already earned his wings for I heard the bells on Feb. 3...

Doug, Sheilah, and family. I wanted to take a momment and say "thanks". I meet Doug at Camp Ko-Man-She two years ago as a new camper at Camp Ko-Man-She. Doug was a great role model for me. Doug saw that I was scared and helped me make new friends that I will be friends with forever. Doug made me smile and laugh when I was sad. Doug made Camp Ko-Man-She a fun and safe place for me. I am very sad and have been crying since I heard Doug had passed away. I will always think of him and smile. I loved to hear him talk about Kings Island. I will always love and miss Doug. Thank you Doug for everything you did, I only knew you for a short time, but you had a huge impact on me.

Doug was one of the greatest most giving people I have ever met. He was the Summer Camp Director for a camp dedicated to children with diabetes when I was the met him at YMCA Camp Willson. We became great camp friends. Doug did more in his short life then most people do in their entire life. He had so many problems, but, he took on the problems of others. What a Man and inspiration to all. He will be sorely missed at Camp this year and forever more.
