News Death Notice

GARNER, C. Greene age 91, of Atlanta, GA, passed away on May 30, 2012. Greene was born in Sparta, GA (Hancock County) on November 3, 1920. After graduating from Tech High School in Atlanta in 1938, he enlisted into the US Army Air Corps and received a medical discharge in 1945. The GI Bill enabled him to enroll in The University of Georgia where he received a Bachelor of Business Administration in 1948. At UGA he was a member of Delta Sigma Phi business fraternity. He was also a graduate of the Harvard Advanced Management Program AMP46 in 1964. Greene's career started with the Atlanta Paper Company in 1949 as an accountant. In 1957, the company was acquired by The Mead Corporation, where he rose to Controller, Treasurer, General Manager, Vice President and President of the Mead Packaging Division. In 1969, Greene was promoted to The Mead Corporation Headquarters in Dayton, Ohio where he served as Group Vice President Paperboard Group, Senior Group Vice President, COO, President, CEO and Vice Chairman of the Board. He retired in 1983 with 34 years of service to the company. He served on the Board of Directors of The Mead Corporation from 1980 to 1986, served on the board of The First Atlanta Corporation, and The American Paper Institute. He was also an Adjunct professor at The University of Georgia. Greene was proud of his service to The Salvation Army of Dayton. He served as a Director and was the Chairman of the capital campaign to raise funds for a new facility and he was awarded the William Booth award for his service. Greene had been a founding member of the Cherokee Country Club in Atlanta, the Dayton Country Club, Dayton Bicycle Club and Dayton Rotary Club in Dayton, OH. After retirement, he was a member of Kiwanis International of downtown Atlanta. Greene enjoyed the challenges of corporate business and developing others into future leaders. He will be remembered for his humility, sense of humor and responsibility to his family and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, Mary Boyer Garner and William Sam Garner; former wife, Marie Hilton Garner; siblings, Madeline Corry of Pylesville, MD, Dorothy Calhoun of Greensboro, GA, Marguerite Garner, Louise Garner, and William Sam Garner, Jr. of Atlanta, GA. He is survived by his wife, Peggy; son, Hilton (Lisa) of Dayton, OH; daughter, Tracie Roth (Dave) of Atlanta; step son, Kermit Littlefield (Shamala) of Rockville, MD; grandchildren, Robert Garner of Chicago, IL, Elizabeth Garner of Washington DC, William Garner of Dayton, OH; step grandchildren, Robert and Mills Littlefield of Rockville, MD; niece, Mary Ann Corry McCauley of Pylesville, MD; nephews, George H. Corry, Jr. of Columbia, MD, and Jere Mills of Greensboro, GA. A Memorial service will be Saturday, June 2, 2012 at 2 o'clock at Northwest Presbyterian Church, 4300 Northside Dr, NW, Atlanta, GA 30327. In lieu of flowers, if desired, memorial contributions may be made to The Salvation Army of Atlanta, 2090 N. Druid Hills Rd, Atlanta, GA 30329.
