News Death Notice

SCHROEDER, Simon H. of Dayton, born 5/19/1926 in Xenia, OH, passed away on 3/9/2013. Simon served in the Navy during WWII and Korean War with the Fasron Naval Squadron 691 out of Columbus, OH. He retired from Apex Tool & Die after working there for more than 40 yrs. He raised a family of nine children and was the grandfather of 25 grandchildren and 28 great grandchildren. Early in his years, he coached baseball and soccer for St. Anthony's in Dayton, OH. He was an avid hunter with an incredible aim. He raised and enjoyed the sport of racing homer pigeons, and he had a lifelong love of riding motorcycles. He was a genius at fixing things and a jack of all trades. He had a keen mind, humorous spirit and a playful sense of humor that left its mark on everyone lucky enough to have known him. He was the best father we children could have had, and he will be missed sorely by all. He was preceded in death by his parents, Gertrude H. (Wolfe) and Forest D. Schroeder, siblings, Charles Schroeder, and Dorothea Schroeder. He was also preceded in death by his first wife of 30 years, Joan Mae (Terwilleger) Schroeder, and later in life, his second wife Rebecca L. (Ott) Schroeder, with whom he shared his love of farming. Simon is survived by his 9 children and spouses: Debra (Tony), John (Hank) and (Linda), Rick (Sue), Robin (David), Jill (Kurt), Sally (Mark), Alan (Kim), Julie (Jeff), and Joe (Dawn). Visitation will be held on Thursday, March 14, 2013 from 12:00 until 1:30 at Newcomer Funeral Home, 3380 Dayton-Xenia Rd. with a funeral service to follow at 1:30. Simon will be laid to rest in Woodland Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Hospice of Dayton in Simon's memory.
