Jimmie D. Landers
Jimmie D. Landers, 66, passed away Tuesday, April 2, at his home in Rogersville. He was born July 12, 1946, to David and Mary Landers in Athens, and was a lifelong resident of Athens and Rogersville. He was preceded in death by his father.
He is survived by his wife, Frances Hooie Landers; his mother, Mary Landers of Athens; daughters, Monica Carter (Steve) of Athens and Marlana Rothwell (Charles) of Pensacola, Fla.; stepsons, Philip Hooie (Regina) of Rogersville and Alan Hooie (Melissa) of Athens; grandchildren, David Carter, Landon Carter, Lily Mei Carter, Breanna Rothwell, Hunter Hooie, Devin Hooie, Lee Hooie and Leslie Jones; and great- granddaughters, Hadley Carter and Sarah Hooie.
He graduated from East Limestone High in Athens, and after working for Goodyear Mills in Decatur for several years, Jim joined the Alabama National Guard, serving at Redstone Arsenal and Decatur's 279th Signal BN. Jim retired after 20 years at the rank of master sergeant.
He joined the Limestone County Sheriff's Office in 1983 as a jailer and worked his way up through the ranks to chief deputy. From 1989-1991, he served as the Rogersville Police Chief
before returning to Limestone County as chief deputy. He served law enforcement and his communities for over 20 years prior to his retirement.
In 2008, Jim entered his first political endeavor when he ran for councilman in the town of Rogersville. He was elected, and was re-elected in 2012. He was serving his second term in office at the time of his death.
The funeral will be conducted Friday, April 5, 2013, with Spry Funeral Home of Athens directing. Visitation will be held at Spry Chapel on Friday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. with graveside services following at 3 p.m. Burial will be in Fairview Baptist Church Cemetery in the East Limestone community, officiated by Mike Blakely and Stanley McNatt. Limestone County deputies will serve as pallbearers.
Jim's family has requested that in lieu of flowers, please make a memorial to the Fairview Baptist Church Cemetery Fund or the Rogersville Parks and Recreation Department.
