Funeral for Donald Eugene Sides, 87, of Decatur will be today, July 1, 2011, at 10 a.m. at Roselawn Funeral Home with John Rutland officiating. Burial will be in Roselawn Cemetery. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service.

Mr. Sides, who died Thursday, June 30, 2011, at Floyd Tut Fann Veterans Home, was born July 22, 1923, in Pennsylvania to the late Jacob and Helen Sides. He fought in World War II and worked at Redstone Arsenal until retirement. He moved to Decatur in 1959. He was a member of Ninth Street United Methodist Church. He was a recipient of the Volunteer of the Year Award designated by the Volunteer Center and was a recipient of the Rotary Paul Harris Award. He was a member of VFW. His brother, Richard Sides, preceded him in death.

He is survived by his wife of 31 years, Ellen Marie Sides; one son, Donald Joseph Sides; one daughter, Patricia Sides Brooke; stepson, W. Mike Callahan; stepdaughters, Anne Callahan, Virginia Carper, Margaret Johnson and Judith Callahan; grandson, Robert Thomas Brooke III; and stepgrandchildren, Virginia Irish, Laura Caina, Michael Johnson, Elizabeth Morris, William Morris, Kathryn Morris and Megan Carper; and great-grandchildren, Wiley and Wesley Irish, Callahan Caina and Samuel Johnson.

Memorials may be made to Ninth Street United Methodist Church.
