Ivan Hyde Dodd Burnett


Ivan Hyde Dodd Burnett, 84, of Haleyville, passed away Thursday, January 2, 2014, at her home surrounded by family. Mrs. Burnett was born November 19, 1929, in Lynn, Alabama. She was a member of the Ninth Avenue Church of Christ for over 50 years. She attended Lynn High School and furthered her education at Jefferson Hillman Hospital School of Nursing in 1951. She served as a Director of Nursing at Blake and Wilson Hospital. In 1969, she helped organize, plan, and establish the beginning of Burdick West Memorial Hospital, where she served as Director of Nursing for 28 years before retiring in 1997. She was known fondly as "Mrs. B" by all the nurses. Ivan was recognized in 1997 for her loyalty, dedication and support of Burdick West, then Carraway Burdick West Hospital. She loved to travel, paint and attend family gatherings. She loved people and spending time with her family and friends. Ivan was friends to many.

Visitation will be tonight from 6 to 9 at Nichols Funeral Home in Haleyville, with services Sunday, January 5, 2014, at 2 p.m. Burial will follow in Winston Memorial Cemetery. Andy Kizer and Vance Hutton will officiate.

Ivan is survived by her son, Johnny Baccus Burnett Jr. and his wife, Betty; her daughter and best friend, Kam Burnett Thomas; she was "Mamaw" to two grandchildren, Micheal Shane Thomas and John Bently Burnett; and sisters-in-law, Gail Dodd and Roseann Dodd.

She was preceded in death by her husband, John Burnett; parents, William Mayfield and Vera Dodd; brothers, Don Dodd, Lowell Dodd, Wheeler Dodd and Jack Dodd; and sisters, Billy Dodd, Jean Nichols, Merle Morris and Mae Wheatley.
