John Marvin Barnes


Funeral service for John Marvin Barnes, age 83, of Decatur, will be Sunday, June 8, 2014, at 2 p.m. at Shelton Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Dr. Ben Hayes officiating. The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. tonight at the funeral home. Interment will be in Roselawn Cemetery.

Mr. Barnes, who died Thursday, June 5, 2014, at his residence, was born May 19, 1931, in Lawrence County to Rufus Lee Barnes and Victoria Gillespie Barnes. He was preceded in death by his parents; one daughter, Rebecca Jane Sue Barnes; and his wife, Arie Octavia Barnes.

He was a United States Army veteran of the Korean War and remained a staunch patriot. Mr. Barnes loved football and baseball and was a huge fan of the Alabama Crimson Tide and the Atlanta Braves. He was retired from Wolverine Tube. His children and grandchildren, whom he dearly loved and lived for were the lights of his life. He was a devout christian and family man who was a member of Southside Baptist Church and loved his Lord. Mr. Barnes was dearly loved by his family and a host of friends. He will be greatly missed by all.

He is survived by his wife, Sara Henderson Barnes; two sons, John Michael Barnes and Jimmy Lee Barnes, both of Decatur; one daughter, Kay Looney (Wally) of Decatur; one stepson, Jeff Coffey of Fayetteville, Tenn.; one stepdaughter, Sharon Ward (Sam) of Decatur; one sister, Christine Standridge of Decatur; and four grandchildren, Christopher John Looney (April), Emily Rebecca Troup (Frank), Andrew John Barnes and Riley Scott Barnes.

Pallbearers will be Jesse Hall, Wayne Hall, Sherman Barnes, Sam Ward, David Ward and Jeff Coffey.
