Funeral service for Vance Elsworth Day Jr., 81, of Hillsboro, will be Sunday, November 17, 2013, at 3 p.m. at Parkway Funeral Home Chapel, Trinity, with Jerome Thompson officiating. Family members' visitation will begin at noon at the funeral home, followed by friends and general public visitation from 1 to 3 p.m. Burial will be in East Lawrence Memorial Gardens immediately following the chapel service.
Mr. Day, who died November 14, 2013, at Decatur Morgan Hospital, was born December 15, 1931, in Terre Haute, Ind., to Vance E. Day Sr. and Josephine Cook Day. He was retired from ConAgra Foods in Decatur and was also a former Lawrence County Alabama Deputy Sheriff and jailer. Prior to relocating to the Loosier community in 1976 from Chicago, Mr. Day worked as a foreman for the Morgan Sash and Door Company for 20 years. As a young boy, he was preceded in death by his parents and was raised in a loving home by his sister and brother-in-law, Thelma and Elmer Stepp, with his beloved niece, Jude Stepp Shaffer and nephews, John and Delbert Stepp. Mr. Day was the sole surviving family member of six sisters and five brothers, Thelma Day Stepp, Harold (Happy) Day, Juanita Day Fields, Mildred Day Flora, Frances Day Bridwell, Albert Day, Roy Day, Violet (Peg) Day Flora, Charles (Dick) Day, Robert Day and Mary Day Houser.
Survivors include his wife, the love of his life for 60 years, Rebecca Jean Thompson Day of Hillsboro; two sons, Roger Day (Lillis Day) of Bartlett, Tenn., and Kenneth Day (Sandra Day) of Madison; two daughters, Susan Day Schoenhoff (Dave Schoenhoff) of Romeoville, Ill., and Donna Day Montgomery (Tim Montgomery) of Trinity; 11 grandchildren, Jeremiah Day of St. George , Utah, Heather Gustafson of Navarre, Fla., Trevor Day of Bartlett, Tenn., Sara Trivedi of Park Ridge, Ill., Christina Swanson of Burlington, Ky., Jessica Day of West Ridge, Ill., Andrew Day of Austin, Texas, Melissa Congoran of Joliet, Ill., Derek Schoenhoff of Romeoville, Ill., Ashley Delashaw of Hillsboro, Megan Pitz of Hillsboro, and one step granddaughter, Elizabeth King of Moulton. Mr. Day also enjoyed his 18 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
Pallbearers will be his two sons, Roger and Kenneth Day and four grandsons. Derek Schoenhoff, Jeremiah Day, Trevor Day and Andrew Day. Honorary pallbearer will be Kellen Dutton.
A special tribute will be made by Milton Jeffreys and words of remembrance will be spoken by Roger and Kenneth Day.
