Melvin L. Drake

Funeral service for Melvin L. Drake, age 84, of Decatur, will be Friday, January 24, 2014, at 11 a.m. at Shelton Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Dr. Scotty Hogan officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. Interment will follow at 2 p.m. in Forest Hill Cemetery, Birmingham.

Mr. Drake died Tuesday, January 21, 2014, at Decatur Morgan Hospital. He was born February 25, 1929, in Birmingham, to Acie Drake and Ellie Haynes Drake.

Melvin was one of those rare individuals with whom everyone enjoyed spending time no matter the circumstance. He loved his family, his church, and his many friends. He had a never ending curiosity about everyone and everything around him. He enjoyed traveling the world with Kay, and his favorite thing to do was to watch the sun set over the beaches in Hawaii with Kay at his side. He was a great husband, father, grandfather, and friend who led by example more than words.

Mr. Drake was retired from Drummond Coal Company after 41 years of service. He served in the U.S. Air Force before joining the U.S. Army. He was also retired from the U.S. Army after 20 years of active and reserve service.

Melvin and Kay moved to Decatur 16 years ago, and have been longtime members of Westmeade Baptist Church, where Melvin served as a Deacon and as a member of Charlie Ezell's Sunday school class. He loved his Lord, his church, and all of the members and staff of Westmeade.

The family would like to thank Doctors Charles Prickett, Allen Schmidt, and Tracy Neal, and the nursing staff at Decatur Morgan Hospital for the wonderful care Melvin received during his last illness, and Rev. Dr. Scotty Hogan for the spiritual support provided to Melvin and Kay.

Melvin is survived by Kay, his loving wife of 63 years; his daughter, Kim Schuster (Mitch); his son, Lee Drake (Diane); four grandchildren, Matthew Drake (Taryn), Jonathan Schuster (Jackson), Michael Schuster and Julie Schuster; one great-grandson, Hayden Drake; and several nieces and nephews.

Pallbearers will be family and friends.

In lieu of flowers, the family respectfully requests memorial donations be made to Westmeade Baptist Church.
