Funeral services for Melba Thornton Yates, 92, of Decatur, will be Wednesday, February 5, 2014, at noon at Roselawn Funeral Home Chapel with Reverend Wayne Baggett officiating. Burial will be in Ebenezer Cemetery, West Point in Cullman County. Visitation will be from 11 to 11:45 a.m. at the funeral home.
Mrs. Yates went to be with her Lord on Sunday, February 2, 2014, at her residence. She was born August 7, 1921, in Cullman to Lee Roy and Floy Thornton. Melba graduated with a BS from the University of Montevallo in 1944 before teaching home economics for seven years at Fairview High School in Cullman County. She and her husband, Harold, later moved to Decatur where she spent the remainder of her years as a homemaker. Melba was a longtime member of Southside Baptist Church and touched the lives of others through her many gracious cards and letters. She truly loved the Lord and cherished and often recounted the many memories of her family.
Mrs. Yates was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Harold; her only child, Steve; and two brothers, Feltus and Leroy Thornton.
She is survived by several nieces and nephews.
Pallbearers will be Randy Thornton, Glenn Thornton, Ryan Thornton, Michael Thornton, Geoff Davies and Larry Dunlap.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Southside Baptist Church, Decatur.
