Funeral service for Truman Screws, 91, of Hartselle will be Thursday, May 1, 2014, at 3 p.m. at Peck Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Tim Keenum and Rev. Wally Blackman officiating. Burial will be in Good Hope Cemetery in Cullman County. Visitation will be from 1 to 3 p.m. at the funeral home.
Mr. Screws, who died on Sunday, April 27, 2014, at his residence, was born July 1, 1922, in Cullman County to Thomas S. Screws and Mattie Ann Dukes Screws. Mr. Screws served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He was a member of East Highland Baptist Church and served as a Sunday school teacher for many years. He received his EDS in Educational Administration from Peabody College. He was a lifetime educator; being a teacher, a coach and a principal. He served as the Morgan County Superintendent of Education working from 1979 until his retirement in 1983.
Survivors include his wife, Jean Stricklin Screws; one son, Greg Screws of Huntsville; one daughter, Vicki Jeffreys (Roger) of Hartselle; two grandchildren, Courtney White Greene (Jacob) and Emily Screws Roberts (Tyler); two stepgrandchildren, Lendy Jeffreys Hancock (Mike) and Leslie Jeffreys Dawson (Lonnie); two great- grandchildren, Rhett Roberts and Will Greene; and five stepgreat- grandchildren, Chase Hancock (Brandi), Abbie Hancock, Matt Hancock,
Alex Dawson and Makenzie Dawson.
Pallbearers will be family and friends.
Honorary pallbearers will be Union Hill High School Class of 1962.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to Hospice of the Valley or Meals on Wheels.
