George Wallace Filyaw


Graveside service for George Wallace Filyaw, 84, of Hartselle will be Tuesday, June 10, 2014, at 2 p.m. at Emeus Cemetery in Cullman County with Peck Funeral Home directing. Visitation will be from noon to 1 p.m. at the funeral home.

Mr. Filyaw was born September 14, 1929, in Cullman County to James Cleveland Filyaw and Mamie Peek Filyaw. The oldest of four children, he spent most of his childhood years in Cullman and Lawrence counties. After graduating high school, Mr. Filyaw served two years in the United States Army. He was a Korean War veteran. Soon after the war he went to college where he graduated with a BS Degree in Education from Florence State University. Mr. Filyaw furthered his education by earning two degrees from Auburn University, a Master's and AA degree in School Administration. He graduated with honors from Auburn and was a lifelong Auburn fan.

George Filyaw began his career in education teaching and coaching basketball at West Point High School in Cullman County. Later he and his wife Peggy Sue Sims Filyaw and their two children moved to Huntsville where he taught and coached in the Huntsville City School system. From there he went to work for the Madison County School System in various administrative positions. After a career spanning 31 years Mr. Filyaw retired in 1986.

Mr. Filyaw spent his last few years battling Parkinson's Disease, skin cancer and heart problems. He was a fighter until the end. The family would like to thank Hospice of the Valley and the staff at Riverside Senior Living for the excellent quality, loving care he received in these last six months.

George Wallace Filyaw was preceded in death by his wife of 56 years, Peggy Sue Sims Filyaw; son, Charles Wallace Filyaw; his parents; sister, Bonnie Ruth Filyaw; brothers, Talmadge Filyaw and Colonel Ward Filyaw.

Survivor include a

daughter, Cathy Filyaw Wallace (Keith); grandsons, Christopher Wallace (Stefanie) and Kevin Wallace; granddaughter, Michelle Wallace Bendickson (Jon); great-grandchildren, Blaze Wallace, Caroline Bendickson, Andrew Bendickson and Connor Wallace.

Pallbearers will be family.
