Funeral service for Edward Joshua Mathis, Sr., 86, of Decatur, will be today, July 29, 2012, at 4:00 p.m. at Shelton Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Dallas Culver and the Rev. Keith Wright officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. Interment will be Monday, July 30, 2012, in Memphis Memorial Gardens.
Mr. Mathis, who died Friday, July 27, 2012, at Decatur General Hospital, was born November 13, 1925, in Iowa, to Milo Jennings Mathis and Olga Janda Mathis. He was in the 63rd division, 254th Infantry regiment of the United States Army in World War II. He was a member of the Masons in Memphis, TN. He retired from Redstone Arsenal Army Missile Command. He was preceded in death by his parents; his sister, Catherine Horn; and brothers, Milo J. Mathis, II, Frank Bures and Chuck Bures.
He was a loving husband, father and grandfather and will be greatly missed. He is survived by his loving wife, Bernice "Jean" Campbell Mathis of Decatur; his son, Edward J. Mathis, Jr. (Scarlott) of Hartselle; his daughter, Phyllis Mathis Holt (Jerry) of Trinity; his granddaughter, Emily H. Hollis (Heath) of Trinity; two step grandchildren, Chris Holt (Beth) of Athens and Pam Hale (Tony) of Trinity; four step great- grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
Pallbearers will be family and friends.
The family would like to thank Hospice of the Valley and the doctors and nurses at Decatur General Hospital for their excellent and loving care.
