Raynold J. 'Jake' Sedlak
The Guest Book is expired.
Raynold J. "Jake" Sedlak departed this life October 27, 2012, at Riverside Senior Living
in Decatur. He was born on March 24, 1922, to Jacob Louis and Carrie Rose Sedlak in the small
farming community of Bee, Nebraska. After graduation from high school, he received a
mechanical engineering degree from the University of Nebraska, where he was a member of Phi Gamma Delta fraternity and lettered in baseball.
His education was interrupted by World War II, during which he served in the Army Corps of Engineers, receiving a medical discharge. He married the former Catharine Jeannette Dillon on November 15, 1947. After college graduation, he took a civilian job in the fledgling field of aeronautical engineering at Holloman Air Force Base near Alamogordo, New Mexico. He was then recruited to attend Purdue University, earning a master's degree in aeronautical
engineering. In October of 1960, he and his family moved to Decatur, where he accepted a position under Dr. Wernher von Braun at Redstone Arsenal, and after NASA split off, worked for the U.S. Army Missile Command until his retirement in 1986.
Mr. Sedlak was a wonderful example of the "Greatest Generation" and was a much beloved and respected citizen, husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He was very active in Scouting during his sons' youth, serving for many years as Scoutmaster and Committee Member for BSA Troop 16 in Decatur. He was a longtime member of the Marshall Space Flight
Center Trap & Skeet Club. He will be sorely missed, but his deep legacy and calm demeanor will never be forgotten. His salvation in Jesus Christ was secure, and the family takes great comfort
in knowing that he is in glory with his Heavenly Father as we speak.
Mr. Sedlak is survived by his beloved wife, Jeannette, as well as three sons, Justin
(Linda), Randy (Carla) and Jon (Shelley). Also surviving him are nine grandchildren, Cecelia
Amundson (Matthew), Justin B. Sedlak, Jr., Joshua Sedlak, Anna Sedlak, Carrie Sedlak,
Rebecca Sedlak, Mallie Sedlak, Charlotte Sedlak and Lucy Sedlak, plus three great-grandchildren,
Benjamin Amundson, Emily Amundson and Julia Amundson.
Funeral services will be held at First Bible Church of Decatur at 3 p.m. on Friday, November 2, 2012, with visitation at the church two hours preceding. Berryhill Funeral Home of
Huntsville is assisting the family, who sincerely thanks the staff and caregivers at Riverside Senior Living, All Care, and Decatur Home Care for their loving care of Jake during these last
one and a half years. It is requested that memorials, if desired, be made in Jake's name to Sav-A-Life Pregnancy Center, 801 Bradley Street, Southwest, Decatur, Alabama 35601.
