Eugene
Callaghan, III
Eugene F. Callaghan,III, 50, a lifelong Delawarean, died on June 30, 2013, from renal cell carcinoma.
Gene was a 1980 graduate of Salesianum School and a 1984 graduate of the University of Delaware. He was most recently employed by Glen Gery Brick Company, and previously at Delaware Brick. In his spare time he loved to golf and hunt - he was a member of Ducks Unlimited - and was an adept Mr. Handyman. When his son Danny was in elementary school, Gene coached St. Helena's C.Y.M. football. Since 1999 Gene had been an active member of the Caesar Rodney Rotary Club, where he had recently finished a term as President. In recognition of his service to Rotary, the club recently named their annual scholarship at Padua Academy in his honor.
He will always be remembered for his sense of humor even when he was at his sickest. Gene touched many lives and was an inspiration to all who knew him. He loved his family and taught his children many valuable lessons that they will always have with them.
The family wishes to thank all of our friends and family who were so kind and generous during this difficult time.
Gene is survived by his loving wife of 24 years, Mary Ann Knox Callaghan and their children: Daniel E., Kelsey A. and Shawn M; his parents, Eugene F., Jr. and Joan Schauber Callaghan; 5 siblings: Sr. John Elizabeth Callaghan, OSFS, Lauri Witte, Kevin Callaghan, Sean Callaghan and John Callaghan; and several nieces and nephews.
A viewing will be held from 5-8pm, Friday, July 5 at the McCrery & Harra Funeral Home, 3924 Concord Pike, Talleyville (Route 202, south of Silverside Rd.) with additional, overflow parking available in the rear lot of the Brandywine Y.M.C.A., 3 Mt. Lebanon Rd. The Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10am, Saturday, July 6 at St. Helena Catholic Church, 602 Philadelphia Pike, followed by interment at Cathedral Cemetery. The family suggests memorial contributions to the Eugene F. Callaghan, III Scholarship Fund at Padua Academy, c/o Caesar Rodney Rotary, P.O. Box 1085, Wilmington, DE 19899.

The "whys" and "surely nots" linger.
While we can't fathom the depths of grief, we do observe the pain of loss sometimes eases.
We will share our stories of Gene in our family for generations.
Our family's prayers are with yours.

Gene was an extraordinary gentleman who exudes a graceful strength. You can always count on his welcoming smile and genuine kindness and sense of humor. Whenever Gene's name is mentioned in a conversation, everyone can not help but instantly smile and agree what an awesomely nice guy he is. (Joan, sorry about the grammar)
Our prayers and thoughts are with you all, and may you be blessed with the many loving, happy, fun memories of your Gene.
