Helen Marie O'Brien AGE: 84 • Wilmington Helen Marie O'Brien of Wilmington, DE, formerly of Woodcliff Lake, NJ, died at home on Thursday, January 29, 2015 surrounded by her family. Born to the late Peter Aloysius Dirr and Marie Sabina Schwenzer, Helen attended St. Joseph's College for Women in Brooklyn, NY and Seton Hall University in South Orange, NJ. She earned her PhD in Early Childhood Development from Catholic University. Helen taught a variety of grade levels, from elementary through college, during her long career, and in addition to teaching, was the founder of the Englewood Cliffs Montessori School and Montessori Learning Center of Pascack Valley. In addition to her professional pursuits, Helen was active in IHM Social Ministry and with the local chapter of the AARP. Helen was predeceased by her siblings, Maria Clara Zimmerman, Peter George Dirr, John Paul Dirr, Sr., Gertrude Marie Kane, Joseph Frederick Dirr, Teresa Marie Ann Little, Francis Aloysius Dirr, Margaret Mary Vasak, and Catherine Mary Amberson. She is survived by her husband of 43 years, Francis L O'Brien; son, Paul James O'Brien and his wife Melissa; siblings, Ann Marie Hannon, James Aloysius Dirr, and Sabina Marie Grimmelbein; 44 nieces and nephews; 83 great nieces and nephews; and 39 great-great nieces and nephews. A viewing will be held on Monday, February 2 from 5-8 pm at the McCrery & Harra Funeral Home, 3924 Concord Pike, Wilmington, DE 19803. Overflow parking is available at the Brandywine YMCA. Another viewing will be held the following day from 11 am to 11:45 am at Immaculate Heart of Mary Church, 4701 Weldin Rd., Wilmington, DE. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 12 noon. O'Toole Sr., Lawrence J.  
Lawrence J. O'Toole, Sr. AGE: 85 • Wilmington Lawrence J. O'Toole Sr., age 85, passed away peacefully on January 28, 2015 surrounded by his loving family. Son of the late John J. and Madelyn W. O'Toole, "Larry" was also preceded in death by his sister, Rhita and brother, John. Larry was a standout "triple threat" athlete at Wilmington High School, excelling at basketball, baseball and football. He attended the University of Delaware on a football scholarship and also played baseball. He was especially proud to be a member of the university's 1946 Cigar Bowl National Championship football team. After two years of service in the United States Army, he completed a degree in education at the West Chester State Teachers' College. Following his education, he began what would become a 33-year teaching career at Bohemia Manor High School in nearby Maryland. At "Bo Manor," Larry enjoyed his many years as a Biology teacher and was proud to inspire numerous students on to careers in the sciences. He also shared his love of sports as an assistant football and baseball coach for many seasons. Larry retired in 1994. In his own words, his greatest achievement was his family. He is survived by his wife Julie (Rubini), and six children: Larry O'Toole, Jr., Maureen Murphy, Loraine O'Toole, David O'Toole, Diane Ruth and Darren O'Toole. Two highlights of his later years were his grandchildren, Christian Ruth and Daniel Murphy. Larry is also survived by his sister-in-law, Lena O'Toole, as well as several nieces and nephews. His family is grateful to the staffs of Christiana Care Hospital, ManorCare Health Services Pike Creek, and Heartland Hospice for all their care and compassion. A viewing will be held on Monday, February 2 from 10:00-11:30AM at the Doherty Funeral Home, 3200 Limestone Road, Pike Creek, Wilmington, DE 19808. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 12:15PM at St. Catherine of Siena Church, 2503 Centerville Road, Wilmington, DE 19808. Interment will follow in All Saints Cemetery.
