Anita Mae Cress

Anita Mae Cress, 89, of Wilmington, died at her home on March 20, 2013.

Mrs. Cress graduated from Ursinus College in June 1944 with a BA degree in English. She was also the May Queen of her senior class. She taught English at the Conshohocken Middle School in Conshohocken, PA from 1944 to 1945. Thereafter, she was employed as a sales representative with the Liberty Mutual Insurance Company in Philadelphia from 1945 to 1948.

In March 1948, she married Harry Cress and moved to Arlington, NJ. They moved to Wilmington in 1949.

As a devoted wife and mother, Mrs. Cress taught Sunday School at Westminster Presbyterian Church from 1956 to 1958. Upon joining Aldersgate United Methodist Church in 1966, she sang in the choir for about four years and was active in various committees.

As an avid golfer, she played the game for 50 years. She played at the Concord Country Club and was runner up for the club championship in 1974. She was a long time member of the DuPont Country Club where she won the Kuan Yin Tournament in 1964 and the Associate Women's Senior Championship in 1980.

The family wishes to thank Seasons Hospice for their care and compassion.

Mrs. Cress is predeceased by her brother, Dr. Stanley Hess of Houston, TX. She is survived by her husband of 65 years, Harry and her son David of Wilmington. She is also survived by a nephew Stanley Hess of Coeur d'alene, ID and a niece Sue Edmonson of Houston, TX and a great-niece Katherine Edmonson of Austin, TX.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, March 23, at 1 pm in the Chapel at Aldersgate United Methodist Church, 2313 Concord Pike, Wilmington, DE. Interment will be private.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to the , Delaware Chapter, 240 N. James Street, Suite 100a, Newport, DE 19804.
