Age 87, of Milford, DE, passed away on Sunday, October 21, 2012 at the Delaware Hospice Center in Milford. Born in June 1925 in Lincoln, NE, he and his parents moved to Milford, DE in 1929.
After graduating from Milford High School, Bruce served for 3 years in the US Navy
from 1943 to 1946 as a signalman. Drawn together by their love of dancing, Bruce wed Eloise "Dodie" Horn from Clayton, DE in Feb. 1948. They moved to Philadelphia where Bruce attended and graduated from the Hussian Academy of Art and the Museum School of Art. Bruce worked in Philadelphia as a commercial illustrator and portraitist. The Adens moved to Pitman, NJ in 1955. Before leaving Pitman in in 1973, Bruce was commissioned to paint 8 large outdoor framed murals depicting scenes of the historic Pitman Grove, which hang in downtown Pitman to this day.
Avid golfers, Bruce and Dodie moved to Medford, NJ in 1973 and joined the Medford Lakes Country Club. After serving as Club President, Bruce was awarded an honorary lifetime membership to the club. The dining room of the club is decorated with 200 caricature portraits of all the club men painted by Bruce, as well as several large landscapes of the course's most scenic holes.
Returning to Milford in 1995, Bruce joined the Milford Art League. In 2009 he was invited to participate in a project to create 6 very large outdoor murals on the Salvation Army Building in Milford depicting historic scenes of Milford. Bruce painted one mural depicting the Old Train Station and a second mural depicting the Old Spoon Factory, featuring men in rowboats fishing on Haven Lake in the foreground. Bruce paid tribute to his wife of 63 years by painting "Dodie" on the back of one of the rowboats. He leaves a vast legacy of art. A member of Shawnee Country Club in Milford, Bruce golfed daily well into his 80's.
Bruce was preceded in death by his parents, Wesley and Bertha Aden and a son Gary of Portsmouth, VA. He is survived by his wife Dodie of Milford; and his daughter, Claudia of San Jose, CA.
A celebration of Bruce's life will be held at a later date.
