Carolyn D. Burton

Carolyn Dickerson Burton, 81, of Wilmington, and formerly of West Chester, PA, died on February 5, 2014.

Daughter of Raymond and Geneva Dickerson, Carolyn was born and raised in Wilmington, attended Harlan Elementary School and graduated in 1950 from P.S. DuPont High School. She attended the University of Delaware, graduating in 1954 with a degree in Elementary Education. While at U of D, Carolyn met her future husband and the love of her life, Richard E. Burton. They married in 1954 and during their 42 years of marriage made their home in various communities in DE, VA, N.J., MI, Il and PA. Early in her working career, she was a teacher in Norfolk, VA, Harlan Elementary, and A.I. DuPont School District. Although trained as a teacher, the main priority in Carolyn's life was raising her family, and she cherished the time spent with them. She was an avid reader, excellent cook, loved the arts, attending movies, crossword puzzles, and was an accomplished seamstress and knitter.

Her husband, Richard died in 1996 and she is survived by their 4 children: Richard E. Burton, Jr. and his wife Amy, Jean Burton Fay and her husband Bill, David R. Burton and his wife Ginger, and Alan R. Burton and his wife Kelly; 11 grandchildren: Ellen Burton, Drew Burton, Carolyn Fay, Sarah Burton, Mary Fay, Julie Burton, Mally Burton, Will Fay, Zachary Burton, Katie Burton, and A.J. Burton; 1 brother, William Dickerson; and numerous nieces and nephews who saw her as a maternal figure. She was preceded in death by her sister, Jean Brentlinger.

A viewing will be held from 6-8pm, Monday, February 10 at the McCrery & Harra Funeral Home, 3924 Concord Pike, Talleyville, DE (Route 202, south of Silverside Rd.), where the funeral service will be held at 11am, Tuesday, February 11. Interment will be at Birmingham-Lafayette Cemetery, West Chester. The family suggests honoring the memory of Carolyn D.
